Russia Bans Isekai Anime
By Yung Namahage • 2 years ago

Russia's relationship with anime hasn't been great these past few years. It's been used as a scapegoat for crime, violence and even suicide, leading to a few series getting banned. Now one genre in particular is under fire for supposedly spreading dangerous ideas.

The Krasnogvardeisky District Court of St. Petersburg issued a ban last week targeting isekai anime, namely KonoSuba and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, for supposedly corrupting the minds of kids and teenagers, all because they apparently teach the idea of reincarnation.

“The court concluded, for example, that the animated series [KonoSuba] promotes the theory of rebirth, showing that after death, a more interesting, diverse and uncontrolled life from parents is possible," claims the Court in an archived Telegram post.

The Court went on to say, "The world after death is positioned as brighter and more adventurous with the possibility of leading a riotous lifestyle, drinking alcohol, sexual relations, illegal actions, while the real world seems bleak and full of loneliness.” Alongside the aforementioned two isekai series, non isekai anime such as NekoparaZombie Land Saga and Princess Lover were also mentioned in the Court's post as part of the ban.

I've said before I'm hardly a fan of most isekai but this is some bullshit. Moral panics are never productive and the Court must be seriously out of touch to think kids are looking forward to dying so they can be with their waifus in the afterlife. Maybe if they didn't have to put up with depressing living conditions and a sketchy government they wouldn't be dreaming about being reborn in another world where life is actuallly fun.

What do you guys make of this? Will Russia's disdain for anime ever fade, or will it only get worse? Sound off below!
