New JoJo End Theme is the Sexiest One Yet
By Yung Namahage • 5 years ago

Last week saw the long-awaited premier of Golden Wind, and once again JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is at the forefront of discussion in the anime world.

This week’s episode debuted the new opening theme: Fighting Gold, which showcases a collaboration between Coda, the vocalist of the previous OP Bloody Stream from JoJo’s second part; and the composer & lyricist responsible for the anthemic Cruel Angel’s Thesis from Neon Genesis Evangelion. The result is about as awesome as you’d expect.

Episode 2 ended with the climax of the series’ thrilling first stand fight, where arms got zipped off and teeth were knocked out, followed by Giorno’s proclamation to become a Gang-Star and rid the city of drugs with the help of his former opponent Bruno. Cue the series’ trademark “To Be Continued” arrow.

Cut to the credits, and viewers are treated to a sensual R&B slow jam with the lyrics “Every time I close my eyes/I wake up feeling so horny,” as the main characters and their stands scroll across the screen. No doubt this could jar some viewers or even break their immersion after such an important scene. It sounds more like the kind of thing you’d hear during a sex scene in a cheesy 90s movie than in a shonen anime.

Why the weird choice of song? Hirohiko Araki, the author of JoJo, has an unashamedly vast taste in western music that he loves to reference in his work. During the production of a new season of the anime, he gives David Productions a list of music that he was listening to around the time he was writing that respective part to consider for a potential ED [1]. Hence, Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency ended with the iconic bass licks of Roundabout by by Yes, Stardust Crusaders’ first half had The Bangles’ Walk Like an Egyptian as the protagonists made their way to Egypt, and so on.

Golden Wind’'s end theme is Freek’n You by Jodeci, which was released in 1995, the same year the manga debuted. The lyrics may be a tad unfitting, but the smooth tone of the song are a perfect fit for the most fashionable part of the series. There’s also the chance it might be replaced by another song for the second half of the anime, similar to how Part 3 went from the upbeat Walk Like an Egyptian to the melancholic Last Train Home by Pat Methany Group when the plot started getting serious. After all, it might be shocking to hear “I wake up feeling so horny” after certain poignant story moments. Then again, no one seemed to have a problem with Savage Garden’s cheesy pop hit I Want You playing after a shocking plot twist or character death during JoJo’s last season.
