It's been a while since Sunrise announced their partership with Legendary for a film based on the Gundam series. This latest news should be enough to get people optimistic about the upcoming movie.

Netflix has confirmed that Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts will be directing the movie to be distributed by the streaming service. The script is being penned by acclaimed comic writer Brian K Vaughan, and the project is being overseen by Detective Pikachu producer Cale Boyter.

An admitted fan of video games and anime, Roberts hid various Easter eggs in Skull Island that pay tribute to AkiraMetal Gear and Evangelion among others. He's also been super passionate about getting the opportunity to direct a Metal Gear movie with Hideo Kojima's blessing, and even had a cameo in Death Stranding. If any Hollywood director can nail an anime adaptation, chances are it's a guy like him who knows how to respect source material.

And he has a great beard to boot!

Even if Uprising wasn't as well-recieved as the first movie, Legendary's Pacific Rim series proved that mecha action can be a hit with western audiences. Meanwhile, their collaborative Monsterverse efforts with Toho have managed to please both new monster fans and die-hard kaiju fanatics, so it's safe to assume the Gundam IP is in good hands.

What do you guys think? Is Roberts a good match for Gundam? Drop your thoughts below!

I'm honesty a bit mixed on this. Yes i absolutely love the Monsterverse, but gundam is another beast to take. Most westerners typically compares gundam to transformers but its anything but a simple good vs evil story. Its a war story, an anti-war story. Its about a battle of ideologies of why they are fighting for and how actions can lead to devastating consequences and show that war is hell.

Hmm, we'll see where this goes. Frankly it's been quite a few years since I've seen any Gundam related materials at all so maybe this will give it a fresh breath of air. Thanks for this Yung, with the Kong director it will be action packed.

I Want to be hyped for this movie, I really do. I absolutely adore Gundam to death. There are so many good things going on in the background. Legendary pictures partnering with Sunrise, Jordan Vogt-Roberts as director, Cale Boyter as producer, etc. However, the one thing that has me worried, is Brian K. Vaughan as the writer. I'm praying this movie does NOT turn out to be another G-Saviour!

Cg has gotten significantly better over the years, to the point that Kong vs Godzilla looked real down to the hairs on Kong fluttering in the wind. However, having seen some movies based on VG and anime in the past makes me worried some idiot producer or whatnot is going to dumb it down for the "masses". I wish this guy the best of luck though, cuz I REALLY want to see a movie of this.

Since it’s on Netflix I’ll watch it. If I can remember it exists when it releases, that is. Will a review of the movie be a blog post here?

They will never be able to cover the depth of the Gundam franchise in a single movie.

Which Gundam series they're gonna use for this "live action" movie? The first one with the Earth Federation and Zeron factions?

Skull Island was fantastic! ...and the guy seems humble for someone in Hollywood, for the most part Netflix give most of creative lead to its’ so it can’t be any worse than Netflix’s Death Note, right?

The small bit of a Gundam in Ready Player One was gold. I’m looking forward to it.

Everyone remember Michael Bay and his Transformers movie?

Live action Gundam should be like that without all the toxic masculinity and bullshit product placement.
