Gainax President Arrested on "Semi-Forced" Indecency Charges
By Yung Namahage • 4 years ago

Gainax is a pretty beloved name in the anime world, giving us classics over the years like GunbusterNeon Genesis Evangelion and Gurren Lagann. That only makes it more shocking that someone would use the company's fame and clout in the industry to take advantage of someone.

50 year old Maki Tomohiro, the president of Gainax since last October, was arrested earlier this week for "semi-forced obscenity," meaning the victim felt threatened. The victim, a teenage voice actress in training at the company, reported to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department four seperate incidents that took place last February.

The victim said that Tomohiro took nude photos of her, telling her that it's "practice for when you become famous and people take pictures of you," and gave unsolicited offers to massage her legs.

Other studios that have a history with Gainax have responded to the incident. Rebuild of Evangelion production company Studio Khara, created by former Gainax staff in 2006 including Gainax co-founder Hideaki Anno, released a statement distancing themselves from Gainax as well as asking the media not to mention Evangelion in headlines about the incident.

Gaina, formerly known as Gainax Fukushima, also released a statement saying that they haven't been affiliated with Gainax since being bought by Kinoshita group in 2018 and they will not be answering questions about the incident.

Gainax Kyoto tweeted that there were no relations between the two studios.

Tomohiro has since denied the charges, claiming that he only took the photos because she asked him to.
