Would You Want To Be A Doujin Artist?
By WakeUpSnooze • 2 years ago

There are many days a year where I’m thankful that I have doujin blog writing as a side gig. It lets me write about all things doujin related (and sometimes even not very doujin related) and discuss the latest news and/or scatterbrain thoughts regarding the subject with you guys. Compared to some other side jobs I could have ended up doing, I’m a happy camper. Being so close to doujins got me thinking, “man if I like writing about them and similar sex shit, I wonder if it’d be fun to draw those bitches?”. However after mulling it over and assessing several considerations I’m not sure if I’d ever want to engage in that career path even if I was magically given the ability to draw well through divine intervention.

From my perspective most people who want to be artists want to be creative. Which makes sense cause if everyone drew in the same style or wrote stories the same, creative products would get boring fast. With a doujin you’re already limited to the story revolving around some type of sex. Moreover you don’t want to slap every panel with 500 words yet drawing panels is no joke, which means you’ve got to sacrifice length and development most of the time. It’s rare for me to come away from a doujin thinking “wow, that one was unique thanks to the plot, characters, and thematic elements. I think I learned something important here”. And that’s okay. Hell people are here to fap and pop off, not study some fine literature with thought provoking text. All I’m saying is I would imagine it could get boring fast for many creatives when every single work has to be about sex and doesn’t offer much time to make an impact on the reader. Similarly while some genres are more popular, a well written anime/manga can get popular no matter the genre if it is competently constructed. However, people either like kinks or they don’t. I don’t care how well the yaoi is drawn or how beautifully written the story is, I just don’t want to read it man. That could mean the artist has to repeatedly do popular kinks depending on their situation. And good lord I couldn’t draw more than three vanillas before I hung up my coat and looked for something else to do.

Me attemping to draw the fourth vanilla in a month to pay the rent.

I think it would be super cool to be able to make one or two doujins that were personalized to my taste if I had the skills, but I couldn’t imagine doing this for years and years. I barely can write three or four articles about sex in a row before I have to switch it up and cover at least one non-sexual topic that has more room for discussion. Plus I’m sure “I’m a doujin artist” carries about as much weight  as “I’m a doujin blog writer” when telling others about your career. As in negative social points. Regardless I’m thankful that there are those out there who don’t shy away from it and deliver to us the banger pieces that keep us coming back to bang. And man when an artist does get the time and resources needed in order to be able to do an original series with a ton of installments that receives good fan feedback, surely it has to feel rewarding.

The artist has got to be proud of this one.

So there we have it. At least for now. I’ll be interested to see if you guys point out some things about doujin creation that paint it in a funner picture, or if I didn’t bring up some other disadvantages that would make me stay away forever. Would you want to be a doujin artist? Why or why not? Write out some panels in the comments below!
