Stranger Things Creators Will Tackle... Death Note Next?
By WakeUpSnooze • 1 year ago

In case you’re an anime-only type of content enjoyer, let me quickly confirm for you that fucking hell Stranger Things is everywhere right now. I’ve been watching it with my mom since its inception as she loved the 80s time period and it’s interesting for me to see a way of life that I never knew. Season four has garnered notable attention as they stepped up both the gore and overall plot writing quality, so apart from some cheesy dialogue here and there everybody seems to be enjoying this installment. Well, the creators of Stranger Things, The Duffer Brothers, have now set their eyes on new sights and considering Netflix’s stock and public reputation have both been in the shitter lately, it’s likely they are counting on the Duffer Brothers to work their magic once again with their new project. Unfortunately, fears for this new venture are at an all time high as it has been revealed to be… another live action Death Note adaptation.

For those living under a rock, Netflix made history with their release of the Death Note live action movie. It was so bad, so rushed, so poorly written and hard to follow, and so unfaithful to the source material that it became a meme and spread throughout the Internet as one of the worst projects ever released by Netflix. I watched the movie myself with my mom (back when I still had faith I could get her to appreciate anime). From the perspective of someone who watched Death Note, it was a complete mess and while I could recognize certain parts and moments, so much was changed for the worse that I didn’t feel invested at all. From the perspective of someone who never saw Death Note, my mom said it was terribly confusing and not much was explained properly which I could totally understand. No matter how you slice it, it became a catastrophic failure in the eyes of the anime community.

Ah nah the goofy faces are giving me PTSD.

And now here we are back again. The Duffer Brothers intend to do an entirely new take that’s not related to the previous movie released on Netflix which is a good sign. But they are also planning to take on a bunch of other projects right now which is a definite bad sign. It’s quite possible Netflx is hoping that they can work their magic on a ton of shit and try to recapture that Stranger Things profitability, but stretching themselves too thin is a very real danger. I swear if I have to sit through another rushed live action Death Note, I may be writing my own name down in that shit. From what I can tell it’s supposed to be a series in the works, so if it's shit I probably won't even be able to finish it off in one sitting like I could with the movie. For the sake of my sanity and the reputation of anime fans in the mainstream, I hope this project will exceed my very mellow expectations.

Well Duffer bois, at least the bar is set low for ya.

My faith may be low that this will turn out decent but hey, stranger things have happened. Fuck I’ve been waiting to say that. Have you watched Stranger Things at all? Do you think the Duffer Brothers will be able to deliver a good adaptation and redeem Netflix’s horrible past with the series?
