An Interview with Jay Marvel
By Kasaix • 4 years ago

Kasaix: Hello Doujin Army! This is an interview with an artist who needs no introduction. You’ve likely all seen his work. He’s gonna get an introduction anyway, because that’s how interviews work. It’s Jay Marvel, the one and only. His work has been floating around the internet for a while, and for good reason. The stories and themes change, and the quality improves over time. The guys walk around with giant clubs in their pants, and the girls fall over themselves to get to it, rocking their own huge ass, giant chest, or both. Probably why Jay Marvel has been so popular for so long.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Thank you for taking the time to hang out. How’s it going, Jay?

Jay Marvel: It’s going great! I’m glad to be back in a consistent drawing routine again, to the point where I can do interviews like this. I love this side of the art scene and getting to know the artist behind the work. To an extent at least. So I appreciate you for doing these interviews.

Kasaix: Let’s start at the top, could you tell me how you first got into art?

Jay Marvel: I’ve been drawing since a child, as long as I can remember. On the normal SFW art side, Dragonball Z got me started really. I draw tons of curvy ladies nowadays, but back then it was nothing but musclebound anime dudes. I can’t pinpoint when I got into NSFW, but a funny or maybe odd fact is I remember drawing naked girls somewhere between 7-10 after seeing boobs for the first time, probably on some softcore Cinemax movie. They were of course badly drawn and they always had on underwear cuz I had no idea what was down there.

Kasaix: Did you go to an art school, or are you all self taught?

Jay Marvel: I was self-taught my whole life until the last three years I was in art school. It taught me a lot about drawing but mostly about art as a profession. Specifically comics, and I’ve taken them a lot more seriously now in terms of page layouts, tension, tone, text, etc. But I also owe a ton of my teachings to artists I idolized coming up. I’ll miss a lot of names, but my biggest NSFW inspiration was and is The Pit; still the GOAT in my eyes. Guys like Shiin and Carmessi were an inspiration as my peers over on Tumblr and Hentai-Foundry, all of us doing exaggerated proportions proudly. And I even was lucky enough to make friends with some of my favorite fellow artists like Shiin and GoudaCheeseDunn. Sorry for all the namedrops lol.

Kasaix: If you don’t mind, I’d like to discuss the current Fairly OddParents comic you’re working on, Dicky Vicky. It’s been a work in progress for some time, and it’s quite good. Timmy went the natural hentai route and wished for a magic penis to bang every girl in sight, including Wanda. The recent pages show that Wanda used Timmy for her own ends, intending to use his magic penis to take over Fairy World for Cosmo. Where the heck did that turn of events come from? It’s an interesting twist and I look forward to seeing how it plays out.

Jay Marvel: Like I mentioned before, my studies in the field of comics had me focusing a lot on character depth and tone in my stories. If you see my recent comics, you can tell something like Lilo and Stitch’s story is meant to be darker, while my upcoming Ben 10 comic is more of a jolly harem story. When I came back to Dicky Vicky, I felt the harem angle had run its course after 10 or so pages. It was time for a tonal shift in the series. I also always intended for Wanda to be loyal to Cosmo somehow. This was just the most extreme route lol.

Kasaix: You’ve also had an Avatar parody going for a while. Azula is a futa who plows her way to dominance, Aang is packing his own heat, and Katara is apparently into it. How is work on that comic progressing?

Jay Marvel: Avatar was in a weird place because I felt like it would be a chore to get through the rest of the series the way I’d done in the past, a page for nearly every episode. But I’m trying to do it justice, and when it returns I will continue the end of book two thoroughly, so expect Aang/Katara/Zuko/Azula action and more.

Kasaix: What are your favorite characters and themes to draw?

Jay Marvel: I love to draw my OC’s, Carmen and Kelsie. I feel doing a doodle of them when I’m distracted always gets me focused, and adds to their character at the same time. As far as themes, I do enjoy a realistic story from time to time… But I’ve always preferred anything where the character’s sex drives are through the roof! Just throw realism out the window sometimes and go at it like rabbits. It’s something Shiin influenced.

But if I could speak on fetishes or anything like that, I’m actually into a wide variety of things; from the submissive side to the dom side, whether it’s a male or female in that role. The only thing I can say I do not like is anything where a character isn’t enjoying the sex. I don’t wanna read a doujin where the girl’s bawling her eyes out the whole time. Now this doesn’t include stuff like mind break, cuz at least the character begins to enjoy it. But no matter what the theme, I need the characters to feel good.

Kasaix: What do you feel is your best picture yet, and why?

Jay Marvel: That’s tough to say. As a guy with many comics, it’s far easier to pinpoint a best comic. And with that I have to say the original Carmen and Simon comic. It’s not the best drawn but it has a special place in my heart because of how well received this comic about this original character was, and still is. Carmen and Simon beat out every comic in my first Patreon poll to decide what I’ll update first. So I always will appreciate that.

But if we’re talking objective quality, the best is yet to come. I just finished some more Incredibles pages and they’re looking fantastic. And be on the lookout for my Ben 10 comic, starting Friday on my patreon. I’m planning something big with it, that I won’t spoil.

Kasaix: Where do you get the inspiration for your projects from?

Jay Marvel: Can I just shout out more names I’m a fan of?? Ahem… Modeseven (Super knowledgable about his craft), Teterun (Favorite futa stuff), Blackmyst (Great 18+ comic work), TheRealXXIII (Some of the cleanest stylish artwork), Mizuryu Kei (Simply a fantastic artist), Chimosaku (Mind Break/Ahegao/Ntr god), Cutesexyrobutts (This dude just kills every pic he/she does), Kairuhentai (Talented overall, but look at the feet he draws). And so many others. I’m a fan first and foremost, and the fact that I’m constantly looking at these guys’ work is what keeps me improving. And if you don’t know any of these names go look em up!

Kasaix: Is there a project you'd really like to work on down the line?

Jay Marvel: I really wanna do this My Hero Academia love triangle comic with Deku, Uraraka, and Bakugo. I think it’d be fun to balance a vanilla dynamic and a lustful one. But it’ll be far down the line. Maybe even next year.

I also think I have a depraved enough mind to do some really twisted NTR lol, but I know the genre always gets a polarizing response. I personally don’t mind it more than any other genre. And since I have to make people happy by keeping Carmen a faithful, pure girlfriend, I sometimes feel I need to get that energy out.

Kasaix: What setup do you use to draw?

Jay Marvel: No joke… I use a cheap $60 tablet from Monoprice + GIMP for everything but shading. Which I use Clip Studio for. But that’s still a recent change. The cheap stuff was just what I used when I was broke and dropped out of college, and I got too used to it.

Kasaix: Let’s wrap it up here for now. Do you have any final words to all your fans?

Jay Marvel: Thank you everyone who supports me on patreon first and foremost. You’re basically the reason I still do this and that I can work full time on the work that got me this interview. And thank you everyone else, on Twitter, or waiting patiently back on DeviantART or Hentai-Foundry lol. Great stuff is coming soon! And thank you Kasaix, this was something I actually dreamed about doing for years.
