It’s usually us western anime fans complaining about something and the people in Japan not caring. But this time, the mad and vocal weaboos who are throwing a fit over something, are the great people of Nippon. With hype comes displeasure, and no matter how much hype the Chainsaw Man new trailer brought, it also brought some negative responses. You might be surprised at what got people so upset. It’s not the animation, it’s not how many episodes it’s going to be, it’s not that it’s not going to follow the manga, it’s not about how it’s going to be delayed, nope, it’s about the voice choice for the boss bitch Makima. Listen for yourself. I know we already watched the trailer in my other Chainsaw Man article, but it's so hype, what’s wrong with watching it again.

And here’s what the Japanese fans had to say about Makima’s voice after the trailer was revealed.

I’ll be honest, the high pitch voice for Makima kind of threw me off at first too. But it didn’t mess me up so much that I felt like throwing a fit over it. I thought Japanese anime fans were the ones to usually like these cute, idol sounding voices. I did imagine Makima with a deeper voice, but I feel like the higher pitch voice can work for her character as well. Like, her whole thing is supposed to be controlling and manipulating others. With a cute voice like that, it gives off a really cute character trait of someone who’s innocent and sweet, but actually very devious deep inside.

I bet none of them would say they don't like Makima's voice to her face tho.

Hey, the English dub might give the Japanese people what they want. They change up character voices all the time, I wouldn’t be surprised if they gave Makima a deeper voice in English. So I have no problem with the voice in the overall scheme of things. Maybe that’ll change when the show actually drops. I might start to hate it, I might start to love it, but we’ll see soon. Or I guess meant, we’ll hear soon.

What do you think of Makima’s voice? Do you think Japanese fans are overreacting over Makima’s voice? Do you think Makima's voice should have been deeper? Tell us in the comments.

Pretty much everyone expected her to have that deeper Step On Me Mommy vibe to her. I know I did thinking that reading the manga, but I'm fine with what the director chose, def makes sense for her character

I don't think Japanese fans have overreacted. If you read a lot of the complaints individually it's pretty tame criticism. Personally I think the casting was a bad choice. Makima is the Dio Brando type of character who is controlling, manipulative, alluring and above it all. Using a cute voice I feel takes away GREATLY from that idea.

I mean, have people ever complained about Goku's adult voice? It must be one of the most famous seyus in the world since the 90', and she's literally not the voice of Goku you imagine trough reading the manga.

I'm surprised of this "drama" here, from Japan. But i guess it comes from Twitter: Twitter don't have nationality, only stupidity.

There are several Japanese voices actors and actresses that can switch between a higher and lower pitched voice. Its possible she may surprise everyone when it counts, there may also be a verity of reasons for this particular choice. More often than not though a casting choice like this is made to tie a popular name to a project. This can help widen the target audience, sometimes dramatically so.

I reckon that we just need to wait and see. Personally the high voice might go well in a sort of gap moe way, where Makima's fucked up actions are constrasted by her high voice and appearance. but thats just me.

Makima's VA sounds like she's too tired for this world and wants it to end already.

Pretty much standard for an anime about a guy who has chainsaws coming out of his person.

It's perfectly fine for them to question the decision of the voice to the character. I mean could imagine someone like Batman for example, having a high-pitched femboy voice? Of course not. There IS a voice=character, and most people have certain expectations of how characters **should** sound, unless there's an actual lore-reason for it.

Just finishing it I'd expect her to have a cheerful young voice. It makes it all the more unsettling the deeper it gets in the show.

I like how these Westerners think they know the right voice more than the ones who live in the country and hear their language daily.

I have no issues with her voice, but I have a really bad feeling that the anime will be waaaaay underperforming with how muvh hype it has.
