I’ve been actually waiting for this for a while now. I really enjoyed the manga when I got it as a teenager, and I also really enjoyed what I read of the original light novel. I never watched Edge of Tomorrow, the American movie adaptation of the story, but I heard good things about it. Each iteration of the original source had its differences, while still staying true to the source material. With the anime adaptation finally getting announced and shown off, this adaptation might veer away from the original light novel more than any of the ones I mentioned.
So let’s point out the obvious two. One, the main character seemed to be a female protagonist, rather than the male lead that the other adaptation and original had. Another jarring thing for people is the art style. It looks nothing like the manga, which was done by the same artist of Death Note. And it doesn’t even look similar to the light novel, which had art done by the artist of the Serial Experiments Lain anime.
But you know what a female lead and ugly art style means? Yep, that’s right, DEI!!!
Some people are saying that Japan is now “compromised”. We thought it was only Kojima, but I guess it’s spreading like covid. But all jokes aside, I feel like it’s more of a thing that the studio that’s involved wanted to go another direction from the source material and all the other adaptations. Hell, the main character is supposed to be Japanese, and he isn't Japanese in the movie.
That's not my Japanese main character?!
So I’ll save my judgement for when it actually releases. I’ll be lying if I said I had high expectations for this anime, but I’ll still give it a try since it’s based off a story I really enjoyed at the time.
What do you think of the All You Need Is Kill anime trailer? What do you think of the art style? Have you read the light novel, manga, or watched the movie? Tell us in the comments.
