The Original Nier is Getting the Rerelease We've Been Waiting For

I know I'm not the only fan of Nier Automata here. I can think of a couple reasons why it's so popular, but how many of us can say we've played the original Nier? Let alone the Drakengard series that started it all.

A decade ago, Square Enix's RPG Nier went under a lot of people's radars, myself included. The thing I remember the most are the weird platform differences. So the PS3 version, Nier Replicant, had a young eponymous protagonist on a quest to save his sister Yonah, but the 360 version Nier Gestalt starred an older Nier and Yonah was his daughter instead. This gets more confusing when you take into account that the worlwide release is the same as the Japanese 360 version, even on PS3, meaning Replicant has never been available outside of Japan. Not yet, anyway!

Square Enix have announced that they're remaking Nier Replicant for PS4, Xbox One and PC under the concise name of NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139, and it's being developed by Square and Toylogic in conjunction. Producer Yosuke Saito wants to avoid the term remake or remaster, preferring to call it a 'version up.' Whatever you call it, it'll have newly recorded dialogue & music, new characters and maybe even a new ending. Check the trailer here:

So if you want to see what happened well before the events of Automata, including the backstories of characters like Emil, Devola and Popola, you won't have to wait much longer. There's no announced release date just yet, but I'm guessing it won't be long seeing as the game's 10 year anniversary is this year.

Have you played the OG Nier? What did you think of it? Are you hyped for a 'version up'? Let us know below!

As a massive fan of both Nier and Drakengard 1 and 3, I am very, very happy to see this. All that's left now is to get a remake of Drakengard 1 that doesn't hurt your eyes and feels smoother than a misaligned gearbox.

god, the events that lead from Drakengard to Nier was such a mind break. Also, Drakengard had such a straight-up darker tone and story to it than Nier, like stuff from generic J-fantasy dialled up to darkness 11; child soldiers, non-combatant casualties, indoctrination, that crazy child obsessed elf lady and malicious fantasy creatures. Damn I loved that game.

Still have all of them, both Nier & Drakengard including Japanese Import releases. If they overhaul it to look and play like Automata, I'll be extremely happy. The originals were great for their time, but old gameplay and graphics made for a CRT/PAL standard looks like crap on modern LEDs. (It's one of the reasons I keep and maintain a few old CRTs, old games/vids don't do well on modern screens.)

Haven't played it myself sorry to say but now there's a chance. Looking forward to this, it'll be good to see the origins and events/lore from before Automata. Should be a fine rebirth addition to the series. Thanks for the heads up Yung, Obvious out!

I wonder if there will be dlc to give yonah a 2b costume.

Finally, I loved the original Nier. More than Automata at least. Just liked the story better.

I enjoyed OG Nier way more than I did Automata. I managed to get 3/4 of it's endings. I couldn't even finish Automata. I knew what the twist was almost as soon the premise was established and could see just about every step it would take to get there. Combat was kinda 'meh' too. A2 was hot though.
