The Most Generic Romance Plotline In Anime
By WakeUpSnooze • 2 years ago

So I’ve been watching Koi to Yobu ni wa Kimochi Warui this season but I have to admit I’m getting close to dropping it. For a second I thought this might be interesting as the show portrayed our main lover boy as a shallow womanizer and thus I thought this would be a show about him becoming emotionally responsible, but after a few more episodes I could pretty much deduce that this anime didn’t have much to say and followed the most generic romance formula possible. However, I watched it anyway to have a lighthearted show this season. You can only watch so many episodes of basic shit before you’re ready to head out though. But what exactly is the most generic romance formula possible? I’m going to describe a plotline and you tell me if you’ve watched or heard a similar story before.

Guy and girl meet. They don’t have much in common and don’t really like each other. Events happen, and they realize they have more in common than they thought. They start to care about each other. Around this time new potential love interests are introduced that shake things up and try to steal away one or both of the main lovers. The main guy and girl almost do it, but realize that their feelings for the other main character are too strong and say “Fuck these side character bitches”. They get together in the end and that’s show business baby. Also the guy and girl are either childhood friends or in a romance that’s hard and thEre’s nO wAy iT coULd wORk! Chances are you’ve at least heard of an anime that follows this description to a tee.

No, it turns out he loves her from the start, but I wish he was.

My question is, does anybody still find this kind of story riveting? Time and time again these new characters are introduced and it’s like “ohhh nooo is Izumi the side character going to win the LOVE of our main girl Mizuki?!?” No. No, Mizuki is going to stay in love with the other main character and Izumi will die alone with all the other side characters that simply exist to further the relationship of the main couple. Now I don’t want to sound like an ungrateful bastard, Horimiya was a super recent anime and a banger romance at that. Hell even this season we have the runaway girl anime which is somehow turning out to be thought provoking and unique. These shows make the case that there’s some good romance out there, which pushes me to ask the question even harder: who the fuck is watching anime like Koi to Yobu ni wa Kimochi Warui these days? Maybe there’s a market for it that I’m missing but it seems like after you watch a couple, you’ve seen them all.

Good effort Side Boy, but I'm afraid it's going to take a lot more than that for you to win this.

Perhaps I’ve become a bitter old man, but shit I’m not that old man I think these anime are just basic as fuck. That’s not to say they can’t be enjoyable on some level, case in point me watching Koi to Yobu ni wa Kimochi Warui for half a season. But how long can they really keep anyone entertained at this point. I will say it’s only been seven episodes so all hell could break loose in the second half and it could be revealed that one of them is a murderer but so far we’ve been following The Formula step for step. Have you seen an anime that follows the plotline I mentioned? Are you watching Koi to Yobu ni wa Kimochi Warui? Fall in love in the comments below!
