We've briefly covered the reveal trailer for the new live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie but I think it deserves more coverage. It's taken the internet by storm over the past few days with its strange choice of music, Jim Carrey being Jim Carrey, and for looking like it'll be another entry in the fetid pile of bad movie adaptations of video games. And who could forget New Sonic?

Reactions to the trailer range from "what the fuck have they done to one of the most iconic characters in gaming?" to "holy shit, this looks so bad I can't wait to see it," but a constant talking point is Sonic's new design, with weirdly distended limbs and an anatomy that makes him look like he came straight out of Amigara Fault. 

In fact, New Sonic was so controversial that Jeff Fowler, the director of the upcoming film, promises that the blue dude with the 'tude will be changed in the final product, hopefully looking closer to how he does with in the games. Hell, even Yuji Naka, one of the original creators of Sonic, is glad that the gangly creature in the trailer won't be in the finished movie.

But this does raise the question as to whether the movie will be delayed as a result of the redesign. I've also heard rumours that Paramount have already created a "better" Sonic model and used an intentionally shitty version in the first trailer just for the publicity. Or maybe they're really making an attempt to give the fans what they want. Whatever the case is, New Sonic (or should that be Old New Sonic now?) has been immortalised on the internet. Even if New New Sonic is miles better than the initial design and the movie is an unlikely box office success, we'll never forget the anorexic midget in a fursuit look from the multitude of memes that have emerged these past few days.

Finally, long-time readers of this blog may know that I'm a frequent proponent of Rule 34. Well, I regret to inform you that not even New Sonic is an exception to the long-standing decree. Sonic porn may have existed for years but it's taking an uncanny turn thanks to Paramount. Hopefully no one will lewd Jim Carrey as Robotnik but you know that's bound to happen sooner or later.
