If you haven't seen Made in Abyss yet, you're missing out. The worldbuilding is rich, the plot and characters are compelling and the visuals are beautiful enough to give Studio Ghibli a run for their money.

As the name suggests, the series is set in a town that hosts an enormous Abyss of unknown origin, where brave cave raiders routinely plunder for obscure and often powerful relics. One day, an orphan named Riko finds a strange robot that she names Reg, and shortly after they descend alone into the perilous Abyss in search of Riko's mother, one of the most infamous cave raiders. Don't be fooled by the show's initially cutesy tone, things get darker and more dire the lower they go.

Since the first season ended in 2017, fans have been eagerly awaiting a continuation of where Riko, Reg and their new friend Nanachi's journey left off. The first of two compilation movies was released in Japan recently, and with it their prayers have been answered. Made in Abyss the Movie: Dawn of the Deep Soul has been confirmed, although plot details or even a release date are currently TBA. At least there's an awesome new visual featuring the mysterious scientist Bonedrewd.
