Hollywood Plans Live-Action One-Punch Man

There's no denying that superhero movies have made a huge impact on popular culture in the past decade or so. Marvel regularly releases one crowd pleaser after another, and DC has its moments. Even independant comics like Judge Dredd and Hellboy have enjoyed the live-action limelight. And now, Hollywood is once again looking to adapt a Japanese take on the superhero genre.

Sony Pictures are developing a movie based on ONE's webcomic that later on spawned a manga, anime and video game spinoffs. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, the writing team behind the Jumanji reboots and Venom will be handling script duties. Marvel alumni Avi and Ari Arad, who together have produced Ghost RiderIron Man and Ghost in the Shell are also attached to the project.

I'm fairly looking forward to this one. OPM is heavily inspired by western comics, and western comics have had a pretty high success rate in Hollywood lately. For what it's worth I kinda liked Venom as a reminder of that goofy pre-MCU era of superhero movies where they were overly glamorised yet dumbed down for general audiences, e.g. Spawn and Daredevil. Maybe OPM can work in that way? I'm sure it'll be OK as long as it isn't too dumbed down. My main concern is how different it'll be from the original. Will it be whitewashed, diversified or are they going for ethnic authenticity? Will Saitama be called Saitama or will they change his name to Samuel or something? Only time will tell.

What do you guys make of this? Does it have potential? Who would you cast as the bald badass and co? Let us know below!

Give me a break. Will Hollywood try to adapt every manga/anime to live- action? This is getting out of hand. They have to be very lazy to stop trying to write something *original*.

No. God. Please. NOOOOOOO!

Live adaptations of animated IPs are almost universally garbage. I don't want to see that done to OPM. I like OPM.

Hollywood has only done good twice with Speed racer(great) and Alita(average). But despite the fact that superhero movies are the norm now I still see this being a crapshoot because it's Hollywood adaptation.

Oh boy this will either be awesome or it will bomb. When it comes to film adaptions from other media the results usually teeter from a VERY narrow ledge. I'm just going to get the popcorn ready for whatever controversy inevitably arises. Thanks Yung, this is the first I heard of this. We'll see.

The terrifying thing about all of this is that the whole hero association in the series is essentially an animated version of Mystery Men. Which. Wastn't. Very. Good. And now we're going full-circle.

Bruce Willis will play Saitama.

This reminds me of Hancock.

I dunno, for me it's all about who they cast for what roles that determines whether or not it succeds.

I'll probably walk in, see that Vaccine Man isn't voiced by Piccolo as god intended, and walk out.
