Hollywood Plans Live-Action One-Punch Man
By Yung Namahage • 4 years ago

There's no denying that superhero movies have made a huge impact on popular culture in the past decade or so. Marvel regularly releases one crowd pleaser after another, and DC has its moments. Even independant comics like Judge Dredd and Hellboy have enjoyed the live-action limelight. And now, Hollywood is once again looking to adapt a Japanese take on the superhero genre.

Sony Pictures are developing a movie based on ONE's webcomic that later on spawned a manga, anime and video game spinoffs. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, the writing team behind the Jumanji reboots and Venom will be handling script duties. Marvel alumni Avi and Ari Arad, who together have produced Ghost RiderIron Man and Ghost in the Shell are also attached to the project.

I'm fairly looking forward to this one. OPM is heavily inspired by western comics, and western comics have had a pretty high success rate in Hollywood lately. For what it's worth I kinda liked Venom as a reminder of that goofy pre-MCU era of superhero movies where they were overly glamorised yet dumbed down for general audiences, e.g. Spawn and Daredevil. Maybe OPM can work in that way? I'm sure it'll be OK as long as it isn't too dumbed down. My main concern is how different it'll be from the original. Will it be whitewashed, diversified or are they going for ethnic authenticity? Will Saitama be called Saitama or will they change his name to Samuel or something? Only time will tell.

What do you guys make of this? Does it have potential? Who would you cast as the bald badass and co? Let us know below!
