Fullmetal Alchemist Live-Action Gets Two Sequels

Hollywood's live-action adaptations of anime and Japanese versions tend to suck for different reasons. Western ones like Dragonball Evolution or Netflix's Death Note  take a lot of liberties with their respective source material, which could put off fans of the franchise. Japanese movies like Attack on Titan or... Death Note, on the other hand, may do a decent job of translating their anime's aesthetic and vibe into live-action, but the scripts feel like skimming a CliffsNotes version of the original story without the necessary character development.

2017's Fullmetal Alchemist had a pretty mixed reception. Some thought it did justice to the series, while others felt like it skimped on the exposition and characterization in favor of mediocre CGI, like with many other Japanese live-actions. It must've been succesful to some degree, because it's getting not one, but two sequels to commemorate the series' 20th anniversary. The first, Fullmetal Alchemist: Final Chapter - The Avenger Scar, willl cover Edward's battle with Scar (played by Mackenyu Arata), and will be released in Japanese theaters on May 20. The trilogy will conclude with The Last Transmutation on June 24. Both are directed by Fumihiko Sori, director of the first movie, and will feature the same cast for returning characters. You can catch a sneak peek of what to expect in this trailer, narrated by Edward's anime VA Romi Park.

What did you guys think of the Fullmetal Alchemist movie? Are you looking forward to the sequels? Sound off in the comments!

Hahah. I like that the first two comments on this article demonstrate the "some people liked the live action FMA, some didn't," reaction perfectly.

Looks pretty good and catches the aesthetics of the series, brings back nostalgia of my teen years.

That description hit the nail for me, couldn't have said it better. FMA is just impossible to convert into one movie, the journey and desperation was what it was all about.

trailer looks good, but I'm not holding high hopes. I didn't like the first one. it crammed too much from throughout the show into one 90 minutes. the chimera thing, Alphonse's identity crisis, the humonculi, the framing of that female officer, the creepy-ass zombie things. too much for 90 minutes. should've saved some of that for these. nice to see that prince who ended up fusing with Greed.

Amestrian people look really weird portrayed by Japanese people.
