Evangelion, Godzilla, Ultraman & Kamen Rider Form Cinematic Universe
By Yung Namahage • 2 years ago

Ever since other studios caught a glimpse of how successful Marvel's Cinematic Universe has been, they've all been scrambling to emulate it with their own properties. Some, like Universal's Dark Universe they tried to kick off with The Mummy, were dead on arrival. Others have struggled with keeping a consistent tone but have films that are praised individually, like the DCEU and Legendary's Monsterverse. Now there's a new challenger, featuring four cult classic Japanese franchises with decades' worth of content and loyal fans in and outside Japan.

"Shin" in Japanese means something along the lines of "new" or "ultimate," and is a common prefix for reboots of existing franchises. For example, Shin Godzilla and the upcoming movies Shin Ultraman and Shin Kamen Rider. It's also worth mentioning that the latest Evangelion movie, 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time was released in Japan as Shin Evangerion Gekijoban. Other than sharing a word in their titles, all of these movies are either written or directed by Eva creator Hideaki Anno, who'll serve as the Kevin Feige to the Shin Japan Heroes Universe.

Studios Toho, Toei, Khara and Tsuburaya Productions will initially be collaborating on crossover events and merch, but a full-on crossover movie is bound to happen soon. Fans of mecha, kaiju and tokusatsu will no doubt be keeping a close eye on this, myself included. Especailly after 3.0+1.0 was meant to be the literal end of Evangelion as a series.
