Emperor Akihito Abdicates the Throne of Japan
By Kasaix • 4 years ago

After a 30 year reign as ruler of Japan, Emperor Akihito formally abdicated the Chrysanthemum Throne, thus the Heisei era came to an end. He leaves the throne to his son Crown Prince Naruhito, which starts the Reiwa era of Japan. Crown Prince Naruhito officially takes the throne May 1.

Below are a couple of videos of the now former Emperor.

Emperor Akihito cited his age and health as reasons for leaving the throne. This is a markedly unique situation, as an emperor hasn't left the throne in such a manner in 200 years. He had this to say to his people, the statement and more was found HERE:

“As of today, my position as emperor is ended.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the sentiments Mr. Abe spoke of, as a representative of the people of Japan.

I am happy that in the 30 years since my ascension, I have been able to perform my duties in such a way as to earn the deep trust and devotion of the people. From the bottom of my heart, I thank them for their acceptance of me as a symbol of Japan, and for their support.

Tomorrow, the new era, Reiwa, will begin, and both the Empress and I hope it will be one of peace and prosperity, and we pray for tranquility and happiness for our country and people around the world.”

The title of Emperor can only be held by men. As such, since Crown Prince Naruhito only has a daughter, Princess Aiko, the throne will likely be passed to his brother or nephew when he gives up the title.
