Listen this is about as early an impression as humanly possible so take it with a grain of salt, but so far I’m not very impressed with Shy. It’s a new seasonal anime that focuses on a superhero shy girl named Shy who is shy and protects Japan. Superhero content has been everywhere for the last few years and I have yet to see something from this anime to help it stand out amongst the competition. But what I really want to focus on today is moreso the shy girl archetype that this show uses for its main character.
The shy girl in anime is nothing new: think of the classic stuttering girl that can barely manage to form complete sentences in public but has a pure heart and lofty goals. I don’t know if it’s overexposure or what, but I think I’ve grown completely tired of this stereotype. Sitting there waiting for the next line of dialogue after five seconds of “uh, um, eto, ahhh….” feels like torture these days. I would go as far as to say I’ve developed a hate boner for this type of character. You know how some doujin readers have a love/hate relationship with smug characters? They love to hate them and imagine whipping out their dick and bringing the entitled character down a peg? I feel like I have some weird love/hate relationship with this shy type. Like listen if you’re going to take up five minutes of my time asking where the fuck we should eat dinner, you can spend four of those minutes riding my dick while you stutter. Shy girls in anime are usually concerned with whether or not they’re providing value when dealing with others, and it’s seen so commonly, I surmise I just want to shove a dick in them so they’ll shut up and quit repeating the same worries of self-doubt over and over again. Obviously they can’t be that ugly or pathetic if I’m trying to fuck so there we go, problem solved.

This is one of my weirder love/hate kinks I guess, except there’s way more to love in doujins and hentai with this archetype than a typical anime story in my opinion. There’s only so many “eto, I want to do my best” boys and girls that we really need in the genre in my opinion. Are you watching Shy? What do you think of the shy girl archetype?
