Call me the savior of Gotham because I recently went back and played Batman: Arkham Knight to 100% completion. Yes, that even includes the onslaught of Riddler trophies. The story was kinda mid and felt rushed at the end, but the combat and Batmobile sure made me feel like the Dark Knight himself. It seems like I chose a good time to revisit my favorite superhero as we just got an announcement for a sequel movie in the form of Batman Ninja Vs. Yakuza League. More details are expected from Warner Bros. Japan at an upcoming Anime Expo panel on July 4th.
The original Batman Ninja was a wild CG movie that depicted Batman going back in time to the age of feudal Japan and stopping crime and criminals in that period. It made a big splash back when it debuted in 2018 for obvious reasons. However, I'm kinda surprised it fell so hard out of popular memory. You'd think a movie about Batman fighting against Samurai Joker would be a fresh and wacky situation for Bruce Wayne that stays relevant in pop culture for a while. Regardless, no big memes or trends spawned from it and to this day I don't really know if audiences enjoyed the film or not. IMDB has it sitting at a 5.6 so perhaps it was more of an intriguing concept over a good storytelling situation. Considering the impact of the first film seemed limited I'm surprised that Warner Bros. Japan is moving forward with another installment. I won't be showing up to this one either but I'll be interested to see how the movie is received by Japan and America. While I didn't find time to check out the first movie I still appreciate the idea of intertwining cultural elements from the two countries into one project.
Game devs, hear me out.
Batman fans and weebs should be eating good with this announcement. Hopefully the panel reveals enough for viewers to get hype or know to save their money. And anytime we want to produce Batman: Arkham Samurai I'll be lined up and ready to fork over my cash at the drop of a hat (or cowl). Did you watch Batman Ninja? Did you anticipate a sequel for that movie? Are you planning to check out Yakuza League or do you want to wait until you see the additional panel information? Equip your utility belt, hop in the Batmobile, and save the city in the comments below!
