Are Manga TOO LONG?!

Like every anime season, I enjoy checking out different ranges of anime, from manga adaptation, light novel ones, and also anime originals. They all have their pro’s and con’s, and you can never just assume that an anime is going to be bad just because it’s based on a manga, or is totally original. But something you can assume is that a anime that’s based on a manga isn’t going to cover the whole entire manga because manga ARE FUCKING LONG!!!

People are saying this series is going on for TOO LONG!!!

You’d be surprised with how many anime that you start watching that are based off manga that aren’t actually over yet. So many manga I look up started all the way in like 2009, and still aren’t done. So many anime that get released now, are based off manga that started when I was in middle school. Hell, some even as far back as elementary school. All these great series were being made when I was still peeing my pants, and I didn’t even know it.

But sometimes, that’s not even a good thing. A lot of manga have simple and straight to the point plots like, killing the demon lord, getting revenge on your dad, protecting your family from the yakuza, finding some elixir, if you’re watching the anime this season, some of those plots might sound familiar to you, but even with seemingly simple and straight to the point plots, these series are still mostly going and somehow keeping things interesting…or at least I hope.

I’m not saying that I want manga to be short, or that they shouldn’t have long plots. But when the plot is so simple and it feels like some arcs, or ideas are just fluff, to keep the story going on for a longer period of time, then that’s when it’s too much. That’s when I start getting worried. And we also know that some manga are forced to be longer because manga magazine editors push them to keep going if the series is popular and selling. That’s what happened to Dragon Ball and it’s Buu Saga. We all can’t be One Piece with a premise that has unlimited possibility.

Still haven't read this series.

Do you think manga can be too long sometimes? Do you know of any series that are still going on from when you were a kid? What are you watching this season? Tell us in the comments.

It can be but in the end if the plot is well done and the characters memorable a long series can work soundly.

The only reason anime fans think manga is too long js because most manga adaptations never cover everything. They're basically an ad to go read the manga with only 1 or 2 seasons.

The problem is the nature of manga publishing. Getting a story approved is hard, then getting it serialized, so once you have something going that's popular a mangaka is incentivized to drag it out as long as they can so they can keep a steady income.

To long? Compared to American Comics, most manga are short. Hell, I was reading a Fantastic Four trade paperback recently, and it was the 60th anniversary of the series! Don't get me started on Superman or Batman, they started back in the late 1930s!

This title has innuendo written all over it. Jokes aside, some manga are way too long for my tastes, and though I don't know what my limit would be, I can guarantee that the longest mangas tend to have a lot of filler. Heck, my favorite manga is only about 27 volumes (three chapters each). That being said, telling a good story is more important than how much time you need to devote to reading it.

I agree with MrObvious. If a manga has good stories and the characters well-liked, I don't mind if it keeps going. One Piece is a great example, for even now it still is good with the stories and characters and the ability to surprise. Yet if the story and characters are not great, I wouldn't mind if it gets a sudden death.

Mangas aren't too long, but weekly serialized authors are on a very tight schedule and rarely have solid ideas in the long term. They run out of all the good well thought out ideas they had for a series in a a year or less, and then it's onto the grind of "what happens this week?"

They can absolutely be too long.
They can also be pretty bad because of it. One Piece became my prime example of that long time ago, they've accomplished nothing in the entire runtime if we're honest.
