What The Hell Was Lollipop Chainsaw?
By WakeUpSnooze • 8 months ago

Recently I saw an announcement that made me scratch my head in multiple places. Apparently the upcoming remake of Lollipop Chainsaw, now officially known as Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, has been delayed to summer of 2024. Development has faced some unexpected challenges, yada yada. What slapped me in the face is that A) a remake was even in progress in the first place and B) a bunch of memories of this game came flooding back to the forefront of my mind. Not of the gameplay, but how controversial and “not for good young boys” the game was known for being back in the day. When this released back in 2012 it was on my radar a little because the cute main character and her then famous cheerleader outfit were everywhere on the Internet, but you best believe I never purchased a copy for fear of my parents accusing me of bringing slutty material into the house. For that reason I never really understood the success behind the game firsthand.

The project itself is an enigma of a creation brought about by a collaboration between Japanese video game designer, director, and writer Goichi Suda and American filmmaker James Gunn. What emerged was a violent hack-and-slash adventure with a very eye-catching protagonist that created a cult following in no time. Looking back at gameplay now, it’s a bit tough for me to see what allowed this project to attain such diehard fans willing to spread the good word about it all those years ago, though time has a way of blurring perspective on quality. To me the combat looks a bit slow, but hey watching is entirely different than playing so that may simply be the eye of the backseat gamer. Anyway, I also went to check Metacritic simply for fun to see what scores the title achieved. Review numbers were a bit slim, but both critics and players rated the game around a 7/10 which seems like perfect cult classic territory to me. Looking forward, neither Gunn nor Suda are involved in the remake so we may be in for a soulless cash grab attempt. However, not all hope is lost as some staff from the original studio as well as new faces from the current IP holder will be working together to give players another chance to slice up some zombies.

RIP to his nuts, uh, for a second time.

I always find it interesting when I remember some big trend or product that went crazy with those around me but that I missed out on. I’m sure people who played the original are on the edge of their seat with anticipation for this new rendition just like how I’m foaming at the mouth for Persona 3 Reload. While the remake has been delayed, at least it’s not canceled and 2024 should be a bright year for those cult members. Have you ever played the original Lollipop Chainsaw? Are you excited for the remake? Is it a game worth going back for, or an overhyped title from a young audience obsessed with the MC’s sex appeal? Speaking of which, suck on a lollipop, slash through some zombies with a chainsaw, and await the release of fresh Juliet Starling lewds in the comments below!
