What's The Deal With Anime Perfumes?
By WakeUpSnooze • 2 years ago

The Internet has opened my eyes to quite the large number of trends over the years. From vocaloids to Vtubers to eating Tide Pods, you never know what’s going to catch on next and become a household name amongst the crowd. Lately things have taken a smelly turn in a way I definitely didn’t expect. I’m not sure if this has been around for a minute and I’m simply late to the party or if this is a relatively new marketing ploy, but companies sure are promoting a lot of perfumes that are supposed to be based on already established characters. Guess who? That’s right, it’s time for Snooze to bring up Guilty Gear Strive again. On the website Fairytail.jp, both Ky Kiske and Sol Badguy have unique fragrances available. My Japanese was way too baby level to decipher the descriptions, but thank god for the wonderful world of Google Translate which confirmed that Ky is supposed to have a more elegant, flowery fragrance while Sol’s smells a bit smoky and has hints of lemon and cinnamon bark. Unfortunately other articles stated that the site is only shipping within Japan so I guess we’re going to miss out on these ones unless you’re ready to pay some heavy import fees.

Now we truly know the smell of the game.

However, those were merely two examples. The hole goes much deeper. Just recently Capcom announced a lineup of fragrances for the Resident Evil series. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, even non-anime characters aren’t safe. You can smell like Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, or Leon Kennedy. I don’t know what that means exactly but the opportunity is there on the Capcom store. Again I struggled to find it on the English version of their sites but found it easily on the Japanese version, which makes me curious as to whether this idea is only catching on in Japan. That would make sense cause I don’t know a single person over here in Burger Land who owns a perfume based on an anime character.

I got curious later on and explored Fairytail.jp a bit more. Holy shit do they have a variety of perfumes. I saw advertisements for Your Lie In April, Black Clover, Code Geass, The King Of Fighters, oh my god they even have one for that awful romance anime I watched, Adachi and Shimamura. Trust me there were a ton more than that too, some from series I didn’t recognize and that was merely one seller. But what does this all lead up to? Am I about to drop 30 fat ones on a bottle of Lelouch Lamperouge perfume so that I can finally smell like the one true Emperor of Britannia himself? Eh, probably not.

BECAUSE I GOTTA SAVE UP FOR THE JEREMIAH BODY MIST BABY!!!

Before anyone comes for me, let me be clear that I kind of respect this idea. As mentioned in past articles I’m a greedy bastard so spending money on an anime figure that does nothing but sit in your room is a sacrifice I can’t make. Here though, the perfume provides a function. You put it on to smell good before leaving the house. How WELL does it do that function? Only God and the totally 100% unbiased anime fans who bought the fragrances (yeah right) know. Still, doing something is better than nothing. At the end of the day I probably wouldn’t spend money on this unless I was at a convention or something and it could double as a keepsake from the event, but more power to those who do.

I’ll be curious to see if you guys were already aware that this was a thing or if this is some new information cause it certainly blindsided me. If anyone has bought something like this be sure to drop a review if it was worth the money or not. Have you heard about anime perfumes? Would you spend money on something like this? What form of keepsake do you prefer regarding anime? Spritz some perfume to stay fresh, and leave a comment below!
