The First Female Gundam Lead

Now don’t quote me on the title, that’s what I heard from one of my friends that watches the Gundam series. Let me be honest, I’ve always wanted to get into the Gundam series, but the only one I truly watched and enjoyed was Iron Blooded Orphans, and all I’m really hoping for is that this new Gundam: The Witch From Mercury gives me the same vibes as that one.

Now if I’m being honest, Gundam having their first female lead sounds like a big deal, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s really not. I don’t think Gundam is going to change just because of this, which is a good thing. I don’t think the show is going to be less dark, or not have some kind of political angle just because of a female protagonist. It’s just a cool new aesthetic and nothing more, and that’s how I should be.

If you're looking for something less dark, check this Gundam series out.

Now, depending on how they want to spin it, it could be a political drama about how females aren’t allowed to ride Gundams, and only dicks. Which wouldn’t be a bad thing, depending on how they do it. But overall, I’m hype to see a new Gundam, since I’ve enjoyed Gundam and been having trouble checking out the old ones. I’m interested to see if this can knock Iron Blooded Orphans from my top Gundam anime list (since it’s really my only one). Also, I hope she is the first female Gundam lead, cause if she’s not, I’m going to look real stupid, and have to beat my friend’s ass.

Are you excited for Gundam: The Witch From Mercury? Is this the first female lead in a Gundam series (please say yes)? What’s your favorite Gundam? Tell us in the comments.

Gundam is more than just a mech show that many assumes to be. Its a war drama that truly showcases the horrors of war, no matter how much each character tried to fight, they can't defined their loved ones as they become casualties as the fight continue to rage on. As Char Aznable said it best: "In the battlefield, gender is irreverent"

I really couldn't care who the lead is as long as the show is well produced. As long as it's not more of "the force is female" trash. As far as character cast in general, both genders are represented pretty well. Whether it's crew chiefs, scientists, pilots or villains, Gundam series has a litany of badass women characters. Even some of the maidens in distress evolve into central roles.

If you want martial arts drama cheese, go with Mobile Fighter G. Build Fighters and Build Fighters Try are pretty fun and silly kids striving to be the best they can stories. And stay far far away from Seed and Seed Destiny. Unicorn has some cool Suits and great music but can be a little preachy and squeezes an image for all it can. Looking forward to this new one.

SEED has always been my fav, but Kira and Lacus were always strong characters for me. I really enjoyed IBO but...the 2nd season is dead to me only because watching some of the char's I really liked in that die just broke my heart.

That aside, as someone who's always been a Gundam fan, I'm looking forward to it.

I'm hyped for it, as I pretty much always am for new Gundam. I think it's a long time coming tbh. Also, I love that title so much. "The Witch From Mercury" may just be my fav gundam show name.

Not sure about your opening statement. Have you tried to watch other series but couldn't finish them or didn't watch them? If you like this genre pick them up. They are worth it, imo. If you are into the space opera kind, the older origin ones (and OVAs), Gundam Seed/Destiny, Stardust Memory, Gundam Wing and Gundam 00 are all pretty tight. IBO was only average for me.

First mainline "Hero Lead" (MC), yes. First mainline Female Lead, no. Haman had that from Z / ZZ as primary antagonist. That's if we're discounting spin-off series as well. Since there have been several official MS Girl manga, etc.
