Netflix News: Evangelion, Ultraman Anime & Live Action Cowboy Bebop
By Yung Namahage • 5 years ago

Live action adaptations of anime & manga from Japan can be pretty hit-and-miss. American live action adaptations are hardly, if ever, any good. Netflix made live action adaptations of anime? Let's just say their track record doesn't inspire much hope.

And now, the studio that brought us the Death Note movie are adapting the critically acclaimed Cowboy Bebop into a live action series. Fortunately, series director Shinichiro Watanabe, who also worked on Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy, will be working as a consultant, which is a good sign.

This isn't the first attempt to bring the series into live action. In 2008, 20th Century Fox announced a live action Cowboy Bebop movie, which eventually fell into development hell despite never being officially cancelled. They even had Keanu Reeves set to play protagonist Spike Spiegel, and I say he'd be a decent fit. No cast members or a release date for the Netflix series have been announced as of yet.

In other news, a new anime based on the seminal tokusatsu series Ultraman is coming to Netflix in April of next year. Fortunately, it's not being created by Netflix, but by Production I.G and Sola Digital Arts. Plotwise, it's in an adaptation of the 2011 Ultraman manga written by Eiichi Shimizu, which serves as a sequel to the original Ultraman live action series from 1966. Check the trailer here.

Finally, cult classic mecha show Neon Genesis Evangelion is making its official streaming debut on Netflix next year. If you've yet to check out this 26 episode long mindfuck, you'll have the perfect opportunity to get into it and see what the hype is about.

Which of these announcements are you most excited for? Who're your top picks for the cast of Cowboy Bebop? Chime in down the comments section.
