Knuckles Smashes into Sonic 2's First Trailer
By Yung Namahage • 2 years ago

This year's Game Awards have come and gone, leaving us with a smattering of teasers and trailers of things to look forward to. One thing that I was especially hyped to see was the Sonic 2 trailer that had already been promised. Sure enough, The Blue Blur's movie voice actor Ben Schwartz strolled onto the stage and, with Jim Carrey on a screen, gave us our first look at what's next for Sonic and his friend Tom, plus Robotnik, Tails .

If you stuck around for the post-credits scene after the first movie like Marvel have been conditioning you to then Tails' appearance (voiced bv Colleen O'Shaughnessey reprising her role from the games) shouldn't come as a surprise. Neither would the return of Robotnik, looking utterly deranged and much closer to his video game counterpart. Even Knuckles was foreshadowed in the first, but seeing them all in action together works really well. Better CG, bigger set pieces and higher stakes, what more could you ask for from a sequel?

For the most part, the first movie felt like an admittedly good reverse isekai family movie rather than an adaptation of a video game. That worked to its benefit because instead of ramming the dialogue and overall runtime with endless exposition and worldbuilding for people who haven't played the games like most video game adaptations do, it carefully set the table in preparation for this: a movie that looks and feels much more like Sonic . Robotniks' tech is now egg-like in appearance, Sonic will hopefully be riding more on Tails' biplane instead of sitting in a car with James Marsden, and the Master Emerald sets up another potential sequel that'll explore the Sonic universe further.

The real star of this trailer has to be my boi Knucks. His villain phase didn't last long in the games but here we see him as he originally was: a bigger, stronger, spikier rival to Sonic who works for Robotnik. I was curious about how Idris Elba would approach the role but if his single voice line in this trailer is any indication then goddamn, he's already killed it as villain Knuckles. I just hope he gets the goofy himbo side down after his inevitable face turn, but considering the banter he brought to The Suicide Squad I know he's got that in the bag. Not to mention how well they translated his design into the movie's art style compared to the first time we saw what they did to Sonic.

What do you guys think of the trailer? Do you think Idris is a good fit for Knuckles? Will it be better than the first movie? Let us know in the comments!
