Funimation Has Turned Into Crunchyroll Dubs

Well, time to say bye bye to Funimation, and say hello to Crunchyroll Dubs.

I’m not sure how many people even listen to dubs nowadays, when they get older and learn that subtitles exist. I feel like most people who visit this site watch subs anyways. I only watched two dubs at this point, and that’s My Hero Academia and Jojo: Stone Ocean. So I’m not sure how many of you knew about this, or how many of you will even be affected by this, but yep, Funimation has been bought by Crunchyroll, and now is a part of Crunchyroll brand. I’m guessing it’s going to be pretty much the same thing, just with a new name. Funimation used to be the staple of anime and dubbing in the west, but I guess Crunchyroll has come a long way and is now going to be the forefront of anime in the west. We used to have other English dubs in-house studios like 4Kids and Bang Zoom!, but you don’t really hear that muc of them. The only relevant dubbing studio I know of right now is Netflix.

Everyday the anime industry is changing. I remember back in the day, Toonami was the only place to find anime, and then we got Funimation, who was a big part of most of our childhood, but now, as we get older, the companies and the industry do as well, and it gets bigger. Which is a good thing, but also could be bad, depending on the direction they want to take it. Crunchyroll hasn’t had the most successful ideas, I’m looking at you High Guardian Spice, but hopefully they don’t fuck up what Funimation has already built so far.

Have you heard of Crunchyroll Dubs? Do you still listen to English dub anime? Do you think Cruchyroll is going to fuck up? Tel us in the comments.

"I’m not sure how many people even listen to dubs nowadays" Me. Every time. If there is a dub, I will always try to watch that over subtitles. The elitism in the anime community is annoying and played out at this point. Also, do your research. Sony bought Funimation, and already owned Crunchyroll.  It doesn't matter what they call it, it's still the same group of people doing mostly great work.

Always watch dub unless the quality is just offensively bad. Which is very rare nowadays.

I prefer dubs so I can understand what's going on while I grind in MMOs or work on other stuff.

As long as the voices fit and the script is good, then I'll continue to watch dub over sub. The only time I opt for sub is if the dub for the anime in question is poor and/or don't fit the characters (imo ofc). Or if the script/dialogue of the characters feel out of place and/or unnecessary.

I'm not gonna shed a tear for any of it.

The company changed, but the players will remain the same. And it's still gonna be anti-shounen trash because Japan (et al) won't let shounens succeed and gives their otaku viewers any ideas. (Like how hina dolls became popular because of My Dress-Up Darling.)

All they got to do is host videos, make their user experience useable, reinvest in studios that produce anime

I feel like this should be the other way around. Funi should be the one absorbing Crunchy. Just seems weird that the legitimate business is being dissolved and added to the former pirate site.

I'm kinda sad to see Funi go. They were the best at what they did when I was a kid, because I thought they where the only ones who did what they did. It's like finding out that someone who went to the same school as you did was murdererd. Sure it's a shocking
and you feel bad for the people who loved them but it's really not a big deal because you never really knew them. Crunchy sucks either way.

As I said many times before, I'm into subs due that I wear hearing aids. I like the original voices, not to mention I find the translations of the subs to be far better than the dubs. American companies just do not care compared to the fans who do the subs online anyway.

Correction: Funimation AND Crunchyroll were bought by Sony. And the Funimation BRAND was retired and all staff rolled into Crunchyroll since it was for the most part outside of the most recent controversies outside of the general pricing quibbles. I've stayed away from Dubs since the late 80s, and while I do get along with some VAs (as fellow fans) I stay far away from Dubs. And CR already has.
