Yoko Taro's Position on Cosplay and Fan Art
By Kasaix • 5 years ago

Yoko Taro is a huge name in the gaming industry. He's worked hard to make the likes of Drakengard and Nier into legendary series. He knows full well that people like to see sexy girls in action, especially 2B of Nier: Automata fame kicking ass and not caring about names. Heck, 2B's design alone must have gotten the sales figures up for her game.  When creative people see a character they like, they go into action, either drawing or becoming the character, and Taro-san is quite happy with that, as seen in a series of tweets.

First Tweet:

"I was looking at an image of 9S vs. a bunch of 2Bs (the one from the tower) and thought “Ohh, that was a good idea to take a bunch of photographs for a replication thing,” but then I was amazed to realize that it was actually just a bunch of 2B cosplayers."

Second Tweet:

"The reason I don’t post URLs or actively RT cosplay and illustrations is because I want to avoid sending weirdos their way.

However, I do post things when it’s part of their occupation. I think getting public exposure is part of the job.

That’s just the standard of operations at our company."

Third Tweet:

"I’ve always thought that there are way too many people who complain about fan art and cosplay of others.

Even if the illustration sucks, or even if the cosplay is completely different from the character, at the very least they still make me happy.

These people basically do it because that’s what they like to do, so outsiders should just shut up and stop whining, at least that’s what I think."

So what brought all this up? The same people who think Tifa of FF VII fame is too busty think that characters like 2B are overly sexualized by cosplayers and artists. The guy who made 2B, the robot girl who joins the likes of Kasumi of Dead or Alive fame as one of the waifus of the gaming industry, thinks these people need to shut up and let people enjoy things.

This stuff? He's fine with it. He's happy people enjoy his work.
