Would You Cut Your Finger?

This thought came to mind while watching The Ancient Magus' Bride Season 2. The students needed to complete a magic ritual, and to do that, they had to give some of their blood. Now, if you’ve watched anime with magic in them or even special powers, you may have seen something like this before.

The most noticeable thing that comes to mind is the summoning jutsu from Naruto. They usually bite their thumb to create blood so they can use their summoning jutsu. Now today, I want to talk more about cutting ones finger because let’s be honest, bitting your thumb till the point that it bleeds sounds fucking hard and painful.

Nah, that shit look like it hurts.

Now it’s cool that with your blood you can use crazy powers and also summon amazing magical creatures, but like, who wants to cut their fingers every goddamn time they do it. Maybe I’m just a bitch, but I hate pain. I wouldn’t even want to do it one time, let alone every time I have to conduct a magic spell or summon a monster. Yeah, after a while you might start getting used to it, but how long is that while? So it’s a no go for me. My fingers are too soft and precious to be cutting them once a day. The only thing on my fingers that I need to be cutting are my nails.

Would you cut your finger to cast magic or summon a creature? Do you think you’d get used to cutting your fingers after a while? Do you think it would hurt like hell to bite your thumb until it bleeds? Tell us in the comments.

I probably would, but I'm not cutting my fingertip or palm cause that's stupid and painful, and is going to cause a lot more pain since those get used a lot to, y'know, touch and manipulate things. Nah, slice the side of my pointer or pinky fingers. Those get a lot less direct use/pressure, are easier to bandage properly, and won't have as much impact on combat ability.

Could I use pinprick things like diabetics do? I imagine those are designed to minimize risks associated with bleeding. If I had to open them another way, I would use the power very rarely. It’s easy to make me queasy lol, even the pinprick things probably would.

I probably would especially if it's a life or death situation. You can get used to it but again since it's cutting and bleeding infections will be there to taper that, hepatitis being the most notorious.

Nah

If we are talking in the context of spells, it's not the cutting of the finger that you should be worried about. In general, magic which requires blood isn't that simple. Blood, as a spell catalyst, typically entails giving up life expectancy. If you did need to cut yourself, for whatever reason, make it clean so it heals faster. Biting tears the skin and takes much longer to heal.

Honestly, I wouldn't. But on the other hand, in stuff like Naruto or AoT they suffer way more serious injuries so cutting a finger or biting a thumb till it bleeds probably isn't that big a deal in comparison.

I would pay for an anime to do this, and then have the character wince and complaining for the rest of the season because things don't heal instantly, are in areas of the body that are used constantly, and bacteria in the mouth caused infection in that bite wound.

No to all. There, that was easy.

Yes, but that's likely due to getting my hands/ fingers/ forearms cut on a semi-regular basis during work. Normal knife or a needle. Razors hurt more (they're actually serrated) as do cardboard and wood cuts. Also got used to closing said cuts with superglue or by heating up a needle. (To stop bleeding. Band-aids / Tape get in way of fine motor control - so aren't used usually.)
