Rewrite+ VN Rerelease Censored on Steam
By Yung Namahage • 2 years ago

Rewrite+, an updated rerelease of Key's 2011 visual novel Rewrite, was finally released on Steam in the west following a Kickstarter campaign by Sekai Project. However, backers recieving their Steam keys were disappointed to find out that the Steam release of the game had slightly different content compared to the Japanese release.

Rewrite+ adds extra illustrations, sounds and scenarios not found in the original, including slightly lewder art during certain scenes. The screens seen on the right here are the same as the ones found in the original Rewrite and the western Steam version of Rewrite+, while the left shows the standard Japanese release of Rewrite+

According to a blog post, Sekai Project could only announce these changes on the day of release due to Steam's approval policy. The censored images were used in an early build of the game before being approved by Steam, and by the time the game was finished and localized enough to be approved for release they had no time to further change the content without missing the release date. They also said there will be no "official" way to revert these changes.

Backers who secured a localized physical copy through the Kickstarter campaigh will see similar content to the uncensored Japanese version of the game and those who feel let down by the changes have the option of getting a refund. Still, game publishers missing promises by the time of release is becoming an unfortunately common theme in today's industry.

What do you guys think? Would you want a refund if you backed Rewrite+ on Kickstarter, only to get a censored version in the end? Let us know below!
