Ren'Py Visual Novels All Looks the Same
By ImJustThatKinky • 5 years ago

Man it’s good to be back! I’m sorry for my friend Imaginary’s shit articles but we’re now back with your regularly scheduled Kinky programs.

Ah Ren’Py, the training grounds for rookie visual novel creators, LIKE ME! (Imaginary is the actual Ren’Py user). It’s a pretty simple program which is free to boot. But when something comes along that’s easy, free, and has the potential to make you money, it comes with the baggage of everyone and their grandma using it. And when that happens, you are bound to see clones or just throwaway trash plague the market.

There is a simple reason why there are so many Ren’Py visual novels being made, and that’s because of Patreon. With the success of games like Summertime Saga, Four Elements Trainer, and Snow Daze, making a Ren’Py visual novel seems like a profitable thing to do if you have a hint of learning ability. But the thing those games got that isn’t free or cheap like Ren’Py, is art. However, when you see a successful game like Daughter of Dessert that has over 6,000 patreon using 3D models, making a visual novel looks all the more easier. With the ease and accessibility of 3D modeling programs such as DAZ3D and Honey Select, a lot of Ren’Py visual novels come out looking generic, bland, and ugly.

Now I’m not speaking for all these, but I feel like most of these games are built off of purely seeing it as an “easy” cash grab. These games aren’t built off of passion. But the truth is, passion doesn’t give you shit. Passion can create a game with life in it, but passion isn’t going to make the game successful. Sad facts.

Have you played any of these games? Have you ever tried to make a Ren'Py visual novel? Are Ren'Py visual novels starting to all look the same? Tell me in the comments below.
