Press Square to Pay Respect: Sony to Shut Down PSN Stores for PSP, PS3 and Vita
By Yung Namahage • 3 years ago

The PS3 has been hit by Sony's obolesence stick a few times already after multiplayer servers went offline and support for certain features came to an end. Now, 14 years since it hit the shelves, it's about to take its greatest blow yet alongside its two portable siblings.

While the Xbox 360 was the more popular console during the late 2000s/early 2010s generation, the PS3 was my first exposure to internet-based gaming features we take for granted these days. Online gaming, cloud saves and the convenience of just dowloading a game instead of needing to go out and buy a physical copy were just a few features that revolutionized console gaming. But the digitial future is coming to a premature end when Sony pulls the plug on the PSN store soon.

From July 2, you'll no longer be able to buy and download new games to your PS3 or PSP, and Vita will join them from 27 August. You can still download old content you already own, but any new games you want to play on the system need to be in a physical format. Good luck with the >2000 digital-only titles that will be lost to the ether since Sony have announced no plans to bring older games to PS4 or PS5 through PSNow.

I wish I was writing this as some kind of late April Fool's joke but I can't help but feel like this is the Y2K bug of my generation. I've gotten my old PS3 out recently, mainly for older and hard-to-find games like God HandGungrave Overdose and Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection to name a few. What about you guys; what do you think of this situation? Are you planning on buying anything for PS3, PSP or Vita before the cutoff date? Sound off below!
