Metro 2033 Movie Cancelled - Why That's a Good Thing
By Yung Namahage • 5 years ago

Hollywood has a hard time dealing with "foreign" works.

Earlier this week, it was announced that the movie based on the Russian post-apocalyptic novel, which also spawned a video game franchise, was cancelled. This was mainly due to the story's Russian setting. Western audiences are apparently (according to Hollywood execs at least) too dumb to understand stories set outside of America, so the writers decided to transpose the story to Washington instead of Moscow.

Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the original novel, wasn't having it. A lot of the novel's themes, subtext and factions relied on its Moscow setting, and these would be ruined if the writers had their way. Dmitry could've just kept his mouth shut and earned some fat royalties, but props to him for sticking to his guns and standing up for his original vision. After all, don't you remember what happens when American studios get their hands on foreign works and rewrite them for Western audiences? Here's a few reminders:

Do you think the Metro movie would have had potential or was nothing of value lost? Will Hollywood ever adapt a non-Western work without fucking it up entirely? Answer in the comments.
