Metro 2033 Movie Cancelled - Why That's a Good Thing

Hollywood has a hard time dealing with "foreign" works.

Earlier this week, it was announced that the movie based on the Russian post-apocalyptic novel, which also spawned a video game franchise, was cancelled. This was mainly due to the story's Russian setting. Western audiences are apparently (according to Hollywood execs at least) too dumb to understand stories set outside of America, so the writers decided to transpose the story to Washington instead of Moscow.

Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the original novel, wasn't having it. A lot of the novel's themes, subtext and factions relied on its Moscow setting, and these would be ruined if the writers had their way. Dmitry could've just kept his mouth shut and earned some fat royalties, but props to him for sticking to his guns and standing up for his original vision. After all, don't you remember what happens when American studios get their hands on foreign works and rewrite them for Western audiences? Here's a few reminders:

Do you think the Metro movie would have had potential or was nothing of value lost? Will Hollywood ever adapt a non-Western work without fucking it up entirely? Answer in the comments.

I'm glad as well that the author didn't sell out like Lucas Arts did to Disney. The new Star Wars movies were nice, but ruined the Star Wars universe. Two animes that I watched and enjoyed got ruined by westernization. They should stop trying to do that and stop thinking that America won't enjoy foreign films. It's not that American public is dumb more like lazy.

I see potential but at the same time it wasn't as if the author of the series gave the rights away to be in to a movie so there is that. Personally I am glad that the author stuck to his guns and said no. Unless the person understands the plot and sticks to it then I have no problem with it but time has proven me wrong on this as no one who does these adaptations seems to understand.

If hollywood ever loses it's monopoly on the western movie market. Maybe, but still incredibly unlikely.

Shelled Ghost and Deathnote were okay. Dragonball E suffered because of the stupid hair style.

But yeah. A story set in Russia should've stayed in Russia. No discussions. Also now is not the time; we're sick of it because of Trump and his shenanigans.

Oh dear mary mother of GOD why did you have to remind the population of that dragonball movie?! Why would hollywood think that american audiences be "too dumb" to understand all you need to understand the Metro series to read a book or at least play one of the games. I played the games and I think that americanized would not be gritty enough Metro is in a country that survived countless horrors
