Meet the Cast for Netflix's One Piece
By Yung Namahage • 2 years ago

We're only days away from Netflix dropping their so-far polarizing live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, but their plans for remaking beloved anime are far from over.

Hollywood producer Marty Adelstein first announced the adaptation in 2017, claiming to be a fan of the series for 20 years and anticipating it could be one of the most expensive TV series of all time. He's personally producing the series with original creator Eiichiro Oda at Tomorrow Studios, a partnership between Adelstein and British network ITV. Oda mentioned he had been offered to chance to make a live-action One Piece for years until finally finding the right partner in Adelstein, saying "I will never betray the fans who have supported me for 20 years." The two discussed the series at length, and Adelstein promises it'll be a "true One Piece."

The project was eventually picked up by Netflix, who recently announced the cast for the Straw Hat Pirates, consisting mostly of up-and-coming actors. That means if the first season takes off, the cast should be set to reprise their roles for years to come. The cast reveal came with a message from Oda himself, who seems proud of the cast and excited to show more of the series.

So, who'll be bringing the Straw Hat Pirates to Life? Here's the cast announced so far:

Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D Luffy

Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro

Emily Rudd as Nami

Jacob Gibson as Usopp

Taz Skyler as Sanji Vinsmoke

Now I'm not too familiar with One Piece, but on a visual level alone I can definitely see each of these actors as the character they'll be portraying. Of course we've yet to see them in character or costume, but knowing they have Oda's approval is a good omen. With the active  involvement of the original creator and Netflix's backing this could be being one of the most ambitious adaptations of all time considering just how much source material there is to pull from. Let's hope all that ambition pays off in the end.
