The Otaku Rapper that Idolizes Berserk's Griffith
By Yung Namahage • 5 years ago

I've previously written about the influence of anime on metal music, but it can definitely be said that it's had an impact on hip hop music as well. After all, Kanye West is a massive Akira fanboy, and plenty of rappers from Denzel Curry to Hopsin have referenced shows like Dragon Ball Z, Bleach and Pokemon in their bars. Some, like Robb Bank$, take their fandom a little further.

Warning, Berserk spoilers below

Robb's Twitter and Instagram feeds contain plenty of anime references, memes and even hentai, showing that he is indeed a man of culture. He also has an unqestionable adulation for one of the most controversial characters in manga history, namely the charismatic mercenary leader Griffith from Berserk, even borrowing the nickname Femto from his dark alter-ego.

One of the most infamous moments in the series is when Griffith, now an emaciated wreck who can no longer even hold a sword after being tortured for a year for fucking the daughter of the king he once served, accidentally activates the Crimson Behelit, a good luck charm he had owned for years. Although it was lost as he was being tortured, fate brings it back to him so he can face his destiny.

And his destiny turned out to be instigating a hellish ritual known as the Eclipse, where he chooses to sacrifice all of his friends and followers to a horde of hungry and horny demons. In exchange for his sacrifice, the four most powerful demons, known as the God Hand, rebirth him into a powerful new form known as Femto. And the first thing he does with his new body is brutally rape his long-time admirer and companion Casca as protagonist Guts is forced to watch. Guts and Casca eventually escape, but seeing almost every other character that was on Griffith's side getting horiffically killed off is why the series is known for being one of the darkest anime/manga series of all time.

To this day, Berserk fans have debated on whether Griffith made the right choice or not. Some say he frequently made it clear that everything he did is for the sake of achieving his dream of having his own kingdom, be it kidnapping children, selling his own body or getting everyone who cared about him killed. Others argue that the fact that he sold out his friends and his rape of Casca make him irredeemable, and they can't wait for Guts to get revenge for his fallen allies. Either way, the phrase "Griffith did nothing wrong" is a meme within the Berserk fandom, usually meant as an edgy in-joke than a serious arguement.

For Robb Bank$, the phrase is more than a meme. It's a way of life. In the video of the song with the same title, he rides around on a white horse, like Griffith's, and panels from the manga appear now and then. His lines "Had your chance to switch, you went wrong/Tried to kill me and you missed, you went wrong/Admit I was right, you were wrong,"  seem to be a reference to Guts' apparent betrayal of Griffith, where Guts beat him in a duel but still spared his former friend, before he went off on his own journey and Griffith's downfall began. He also has an album named Falconia, after the kingdom Grifiith rules after finally achieving his dream.

Like most rappers these days, Robb has a myriad of tattoos, including the Brand of Sacrifice, Casca being raped by demons and a white hawk, the latter being a metaphor and nickname for Griffith.  Dude really likes Berserk, and I have to commend him for his great taste.

So why is Robb obsessed with Griffith of all people? He recently posted a statement via Insta declaring that he resonates with Griffith's ruthless determination toward his dream.

What do you think of Robb's music? Do you think his interpretation of Griffith is right? Do you agree with his belief that Froppy is best girl? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
