Did Hentai Become Mainstream This Decade?
By WakeUpSnooze • 4 years ago

Well everybody, it’s been a wild decade. Though to be fair it depends on who you ask at this point as to whether or not the new decade is about to begin, or if it doesn’t start until the end of 2020. Regardless, Pornhub released their year in review article statistics on December 11, and it contained some interesting discoveries that I wanted to talk about. For the first time I feel like I’m starting to get old.

One day, BBC. One day.

Check that shit out. First of all, Japanese has risen to the top of the most searched terms list. Apparently this was due to an influx of Japanese users using the platform this year. I know personally I hit up Japanese shit all the time because it scares me what kinda freaky shit they do, but I can’t peel my eyes away. However, what I really want to focus on is that hentai took the number two spot. But wait there’s more: the Pornhub article states that hentai “remained the second most popular term”. This got me thinking, if hentai has seized the number two spot for two years in a row, where was it in the beginning of this decade? The answer was a bit hard to find and I couldn’t track down an exact number, however I did locate an article where Pornhub listed the top categories overall from 2007 to 2017. On this list, hentai was number 10, meaning it wasn’t nearly as popular as it was in 2018 and 2019. It’s unclear when exactly the shift occurred in this time period since I can’t find a year by year graph, but the result seems clear nonetheless. Hentai isn’t the little secret that nerds share anymore.

Gotta say, I'm pretty happy we overtook BIG DICK.

So my question to you is, do you feel hentai has gotten mainstream wherever you are? I remember back in 2010 here in America, it was a bully-on-sight situation with anime. If you wore some lame ass Naruto shit, you were about to get your ass clapped. Then in 2015-2016, I started seeing some fellow students walking around with Goku backpacks. Akatsuki stickers on their binders. And the crazy part? It didn’t seem like their lives were at stake from bullying. In fact, some of them were even kinda popular. Finally I really felt it in the last four years of this decade. People in college would not only mention anime, but hentai too. Hentai was mentioned outside of anime-only websites and in other forms like memes. Huge, famous actors like Samuel Jackson even weighed in, mentioning his love for anime and hentai in an interview. At least from my experience, it absolutely feels like hentai saw a rise to popularity this decade, likely the most well-known it’s ever been. And some people don’t even think you’re a psycho who faps to drawings and should be burned at the stake anymore if you like hentai. Imagine that.

Do you think hentai grew to prominence this decade? Do your friends and/or culture talk about watching hentai? Share your hentai experience in the comments below!
