Comiket, which is short for Comic Market, is the worldβs largest doujin marketplace held twice a year, and is sponsored by Comic Market Preparation Committee and organized by Comiket Inc.
Comiket dates back to 1975, a smaller gathering back then. The crowds got far larger in the 1980's when during Comike 37, held in Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture in the winter of 1989, it expanded to the scale of 11,000 circles (publishing groups) and 120,000 attendees.
During it's earlier years, he main participants of Comiket were junior high school girls who are shoujo manga fans. From around 1977, the number of participants of animation fans increased due to the influence of βSpace Cruiser Yamatoβ. Male participants began to increase during the animation of βPretty Guardian Sailor Moonβ and βNeon Genesis Evangelionβ. So yeah, the ladies got there first.
The top three doujins, according to Toranoana, were:
Mow's Welcome V GOMEMO 2 absolute girl
Village Dairy Industry wadamemo RAITA
