An Interview with Aya Yanagisawa
By Kasaix • 4 years ago

Kasaix: Hello Doujin Army! This is another interview with a truly talented artist, one you may very well know ahead of time. Aya Yanagisawa has drawn some really good comics, like the ongoing ‘Deviants’, that was recently rebooted and another recent reboot ‘Down City Spiral’. Typing that out, she really needs no introduction, but will get her deserved fanfare anyway. She’s great, and it’s a pleasure to chat with her.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Thanks for taking the time to hang out. How’s it going, Aya Yanagisawa?

Aya Yanagisawa: tired and bored as always lol

Kasaix: Let’s start at the top, could you tell me how you first got into art?

Aya Yanagisawa: My first client bought me a wacom bamboo back in 2010 i think, since then and because I wasn't interested in anything else (even tho i’d studied graphic design), i get into this.

Kasaix: Did you go to an art school, or are you all self taught?

Aya Yanagisawa: self taught, that's why I still draw like a 20 yo, i've learned too late what i needed to do. I’d only learned to use photoshop and basic painting in the app while learning how to design, the rest came with youtube tutorials, specially with proko and reiq.

Kasaix: What are your favorite characters and themes to draw?

Aya Yanagisawa: yuri and girls, futa also, but I don't mind most of the stuff I get asked to do i always find ways to make them interesting to draw.

Kasaix: What do you feel is your best picture yet, and why?

Aya Yanagisawa: none, I don't like most of my stuff completely and i think i'll never will.

Kasaix: Where do you get the inspiration for your projects from?

Aya Yanagisawa:  all of them are commissions, so, from nowhere just the script i receive XD, except one which I don't have it in english, and for that one i think it's my own life mixed with stuff i've seen thru all this years.

Kasaix: Is there a project you'd really like to work on down the line?

Aya Yanagisawa:  already work on that one project, an slice of life/hentai webcomic, but only in spanish, that's why i don't publish too many images, fanarts or doujins of my own, my free time goes to that webcomic.
In general i'm fine doing comics all day, commissions or not, it's not an easy life, but at least a quiet one.

Kasaix: What setup do you use to draw?

Aya Yanagisawa: my pc with intuos pro and currently an ipad pro.

Kasaix: Let’s wrap it up here for now. Do you have any final words to all your fans?

Aya Yanagisawa: Many many thanks for all the support, and sorry for not being a very sociable person lol even tho i try my best.
