A Review of Sakura Dungeon
By ImJustThatKinky • 4 years ago

Nutaku asked us to take a look at this game, and here's our opinion.

Hey I didn’t even have to put the disclaimer about Kinky leaving again because this is just a regular Imaginary game review! Cool. We’re revving down our Sakura series marathon now. Only one title left after this! Let’s go ahead and dive in folks; we might be here a minute…

Sakura Dungeon is a medium length RPG dungeon crawler with visual novel elements. The game was published and developed by Winged Cloud and released on Nutaku on October 3, 2016. It contains exclusively yuri. It typically sells for $20.00, however at the time of writing it’s currently on sale for $9.99.

Writing/Music

What the fuck kind of category is this you may ask? Listen the art’s the same and already covered by the other reviews. Even if you’re hopping in on this marathon without reading the others you can just view it for yourself in the pictures. Moving on the writing is pretty barebones, but I appreciate that. You barely waste any time getting into the gameplay as your only real backstory to begin is that you’re a foxgirl bent on reclaiming your dungeon after you were sealed away.  After recruiting the knight that released you, you work together to slowly make your way down into the depths of the dungeon. You’ll be meeting several other (monster?) girls along the way each written to be distinct as possible without interrupting the gameplay with a bunch of dialogue. The music adds to the fantasy atmosphere wonderfully though I wouldn’t say they’re worth listening to by themselves. A return to the Sakura MMO music in a way. Ultimately both the writing and music try to enhance the experience without overshadowing the gameplay.

I want to fuck in a dungeon. We're all on the same page.

Gameplay

Speaking of which, here we are. The dungeon experience here is much like that of Pokemon. You walk around floors with random encounters while uncovering secret items and events. Once an enemy is encountered, you’re placed into a turn-based strategy format where you pick what moves you want your party to perform. The combat is fun and offers a bit of strategy since you have a frontline and backline party at all times. It’s your job to properly switch members in and out depending on the situation and enemy resistances.  I played on the normal difficulty for the most objective experience and thought it offered a proper balance of “if you play smart you’ll win, but if you dick around you’ll lose”. By far my favorite aspect of the gameplay was the “capture” feature where you can recruit girls you find to your team and play with them. I loved the pacing of the introductions of said girls. About everytime I started to think I’d seen enough of the same bitches, some new baddie would start poppin’ up. My only real complaint here WAS going to be that the random encounters could grow tiresome, but there’s an in-game item to deal with that. Damn. It was just fun. I don’t have anything else to say.

Bunny, I choose you!... Wait a minute...

...The Sex

God dammit. It's always gotta be something, doesn’t it? We’ve been over this. Say it with me: show a sex scene early on so that people know what they’re working toward. I’ll be honest, do not play this game if you’re kind of horny and hoping to see some steamy yuri action. This is the type of game where I worry that I’m fucking up while playing. Am I not doing the right things to unlock the sex? Did I get the censored version somehow? Did I skip passed it and not realize it? WHERE is the sex??? And after two hours of searching, I come back to report that I never found it. Sure girls can get their clothes torn off during battle and give you some CG art upon capture, but not once did I find a real sex scene. It got so bad I opened up Google and ran searches to figure out what you needed to accomplish in order to receive some. Apparently you need to capture certain girls, acquire certain items, go certain places, check on the hub world at certain times, etc. At this point I’m frustrated. This would all be fine and dandy if there was a short sex scene or two earlier on to set your expectations. Then you could say “Damn, bunny girl had a hot scene, but I want to figure out what items I need to unlock boar girl’s scene next time!” Alas, you won’t be finding any sex that’s fap-worthy until hours after playing. And then when you finally get there, the scenes aren’t even voiced! Hell there’s no sound effects! The writing and art are hot, but not spend hours of my life searching for them levels of hot. How? How can the pacing and introduction of new gameplay elements be so well balanced, yet the inclusion of sex in a sex game be so horribly lopsided?

Damn, this scene looks pretty hot. Wonder how many hours in it is...

I’m sad guys. This was the most fun I’ve had with a sex game in a while in terms of gameplay, and at the same time it’s the most disappointed I’ve been in a long time. I want to give this game a 3 or 4 out of five for its addictive dungeon crawling experience, but I don’t review games on this site. I review sex games.

Fun, addicting gameplay completely overshadows sex for several hours, leaving anyone who bought this expecting hot yuri high and dry for a long time; 2/5

If you’re going to make me wait hours before I get some sex, at least voice that shit. Crossing my fingers that Sakura MMO2 sticks closer to its predecessor rather than this in terms of fucking. What do you guys think? Are you willing to play a sex game for hours before seeing any action? Am I just an impatient bastard? Hit me up in the comments below.
