When The Doujin Tags Don't Mix
By WakeUpSnooze • 8 months ago

Two weeks ago I did an article trying to wrap my head around the choice to put two conflicting anime tags, ecchi and psychological, together to make Liar Liar. In that article I criticized the two tags as trying to pull the viewer in two entirely different directions and that while I could maybe enjoy each of those tags separately, their combination in that anime led to an easy choice to drop it. That got me thinking… wait a minute, can’t the exact same thing be said for many doujins out there? There’s nothing more disappointing than seeing some rare tag you enjoy finally get a quality release of it, only to see it’s accompanied by some tag you despise. For example, combine the niche “hypnosis” with the ever-present “fat bastard” and watch the hype fade away.

As a futanari and yuri lover, I deal with this concept constantly. In fact, I often stumble across hentai and doujinshi with tags that are literally impossible to coexist with. I can’t tell you how many times I find “yuri” and “male female female” paired together. Now I’m no detective but I don’t think this is really yuri if some dude is sandwiched in between the two girls. Usually this means there is a short ass obligatory yuri scene with no life to it whatsoever, and then the vast majority of the content is the dude getting his dick double sucked by the two women. This is about the most egregious form of tags conflicting each other and it cucks me more often than I care to admit, but even lesser tag combinations can put your sexual mood in jeopardy. Glasses, maid, and GILF anyone? Mommy, milking, and horse cock monsieur? See how just one addition to the cocktail can risk ruining the mix? Sometimes I understand how this may just be up to personal preference. I could see some people really loving the idea of some mindbreak hypnosis, while others would prefer a more gentle hypnosis session with positive affirmations. You can’t please everyone, so the author has to make a choice in one direction or the other. It’s only when the combo makes literally no sense that I have to ask who the hell this certain piece of content is for. “Nurse, handjob, vore”? My guy, why did we heal the body if we’re gonna toss it in some stomach to be digested by acid?

Hololive and dumpy asses? Well I can't say it's a tag combination I'd turn away...

Hopefully you guys out there haven’t run into this problem as often as I have. Yuri tends to fuck me over a LOT with combinations that immediately would cause the sex to not be classified as yuri by any true fan of the genre. Especially with hentai, a lot of times they’ll throw down an extra tag just because two girls kissed one time during 30 minutes, hoping to attract that crowd to the video. How often do you get disappointed by sex because the tags have a bad combination? What combinations have personally ruined something for you? Are there some tags you think would go together well but aren’t mixed enough? Find a new hentai, check the tags, and draw your conclusion in the comments below!
