The Struggle of Making a Hentai Visual Novel
By ImJustThatKinky • 5 years ago

It’s not uncommon for people to not pursue their dreams in fear that it’s too difficult or that they’ll fail in the long run. I had that thought many times and there were many road blocks trying to push me towards that direction. Even at this point, I still have the fear of wanting to quit halfway through, and it doesn’t make it better that what I’m trying to do involves porn.

1. The creative process

Coming up with ideas, like story and characters, can be a stressful process on it’s own. Trying to make sure that your characters are different and varied. A story that is good and creative, while trying your best not to write in plot holes as you go. You can easily get burned out by this process, definitely if you don’t have anyone to help cretic your story, and since it’s about porn, I’m not sure how comfortable you’ll feel about telling anyone close to you.

“How the hell am I going to tell my mom that I’m making a porn game?”

2. People perception of you

I feel like in many gamers eyes visual novels are already seen as a lower form of video games, since they usual only uset art and text which is already a bad start (where’s my guns and zombies). And with the added bonus of it also being a porn game? Now you know you fucked up. There were quite a few of my friends who made fun of me for working on a porn game, some jokingly and some I think actually thought the concept was stupid. It’s not like I didn’t have any support from others but knowing that my game having sexual content could be dragging it down and people looking at it as if it was trash is a huge bummer.

And just because I’m making a porn game, I bet most people think I’m an overweight guy, virgin, who has not friends or social life. Fun fact, only one of those are true.

3. Where’s the money?

Making a visual novel includes, art, story, coding, and if you’re going to go over the top with it, music and voice acting. If you aren’t skilled in some of these aspects you’re going to have to find some people who are, and if they're random people or not great friends, (like my coder friend) you’ll need some money on you. You also need to remember that you won’t be making money in the beginning and might not even make your investment back! So this is all just a gamble in the beginning. Be smart, have some plans for what you’re going to do and know some good places to help grow and advertise your game.

But when the game does start making money. Me and my coder friend are going to be swimming in the dough and the pussy.

And as of September 1st I have release the first bit of my Hentai Visual Novel Personality Demo 2 now on PC and Mac. (You're welcome Oddest.) This is still early, but I hope you still enjoy yourself while playing it :D. And with your help, we can hopefully make this game great.

Damn, I’m happy he’s the one coding and not me. That shit looks hard.
