The Perks and Pet Peeves of Being an Artist
By Kasaix • 5 years ago

A while ago, I found an image online that I thought I might use in an article. I went to find a better quality image, and found it on an image site. However, it was deleted, with the given reason being “obnoxious watermark”. That made me remember an old argument I saw: the pros and cons of artists using blatant watermarks. The pro side was that artists could claim their work, and the cons were that it would deter from the art. Now make no mistake, I’m on the pro side, artists should claim their work in any way they see fit, because there are those who would crop their signatures out and perhaps even claim them as their own. This lead me to considering what other issues artists deal with, so I approached some of the excellent artists I’ve spoken to before and asked them this: what are the upsides to being an artist, and what are the things that bug you the most? Here’s what they had to say.

Witchking00:

Perk: A job based on what I most love… draw. Also create your own stories, draw pictures to people knowing that they love what you do, work at home and be the one who control how much hours to work (normally finally I work more than I expect and almost all day XD), the constant contact with the people who follow your work, etc :)

Negative: The constant need to work on comics or do commissions from my list (sometimes quite big XD) to can eat XD… if one month you fail on this, then you get a problem… This kind of job is quite slave sometimes hehe…. Also the constant issue with thieves and constantly see how your work has been posted without permission XD

Derpixon:
Perks: You can stream your progress and inspire people to do their own works! Also, you get to sit on your butt all day and browse for high-level memes anytime you want. :) Freedom with your time has got to be the best perk of them all. If you just commit to a schedule everyday (and do overtime if you want), the fruits of your labour will flourish in no time!

Things that bug me the most: Strict, unnecessary censorship. Art thieves, and imbalance to one’s social life (this doesn’t apply to everyone, of course).

Kinkymation:

Perks: A phenomenally fun job that lets me interact with really cool people. Being  able to stream, chat, and meet new artists as well! People share their fantasies with me and trust me to make em come to life through my art, and I honestly really appreciate their trust! It’s super fun to be able to work from home and share my process, and hopefully inspire people along the way.

Cons:  Software that needs constant and expensive updates (Photoshop works the same in all versions after CS6 if you ask me), I’m not a huge fan of art thieves either, although I know it happens to all of us, and the fact that what I make is considered very inappropriate in some circles, despite being harmless fun.

CuteSexyRobutts:

perk: work at home, your own hours, and a good amount of people actively want to see what you want to draw personally

negative: the inconsistency of creativity and productivity generally leads to messed up sleep schedules and long stretches of work

A huge thanks to the artists who took the time to hang out here. As I said, I’ve spoken to them before, so check out the other topics we covered:
