Replacing Bad Translators With A.I.
By ImJustThatKinky • 3 months ago

There’s alot of different people who get their hands on translating Japanese media like anime and videos games and decide to just fuck it up. It sucks that we have incompetent people working as translators and localizers to make people happy that A.I. is getting as big as it is. It’s getting scary when you see actual companies starting to implement A.I.

I’ve seen examples of bad translations and it’s always an eye sore. The point of translating and localizing is to convey the point the original text was trying to say, not give off your own special spin on it.

One thing translators will say is that people don’t even understand the language or what the character is actually saying, so why are we complaining? But, as Twitter users have pointed out, you don’t have to understand the language to understand the complete difference in tone and vocal cues, like the example people have pulled from Honkai: Star Rail. A “ha’ doesn’t translate to “ugh” last time I checked.

A lot of people's names are coming into this debate, and the sad thing is, they’re not on the translators side.

And one of the biggest culprits of changing up context and characters to feed her own viewpoints is Katrina Leonoudakis.

I really don’t want to see A.I. taking over people's jobs, but when they’re deliberately doing their jobs wrong, what else are companies supposed to do?

What do you think of this whole translator drama? Would you want to see A.I. take over translator jobs? Do you think these translations are bad? Tell us in the comments.
