Notes on Webp Images
By Paul Fidika • 1 year ago

Just an FYI, but we're going to switch over from PNG images to Webp images for the entire site soon.

Webp images are roughly half the file-size compared to PNG, which means faster downloads and less disc-space used up (for those of you who download galleries).

Webp also supports both lossless and lossy compression; we use lossless, naturally, which results in larger file sizes but also preserves 100% of the raw image's quality, just like PNG. (If you're unfamiliar with this, JPEG uses lossy compression, which means that the image quality degrades every time you open and save it. If you know what you're looking for, you can zoom in and look at the edges for compression-artifacting.)

One common concern I've heard:

- On Windows, when you download webp images to your computer, and open them, they open in your web-browser rather than your Photos app.

You can fix this easily by:

(1) Right click on the .webp image

(2) Select Open With > Photos

This will open the images in your Photos app, rather than your web-browser. This should change the default program associated with the .webp file extension from being your web browser (Chrome) to your Photos app.

I don't have a Mac; does Mac experience this same issue?

Do you guys have any other problems with Webp? What do you dislike about this file type, if anything? Thanks for the feedback guys.
