Is This Peak Anime Transformation?

I’ll be the first one to say it, but I was never a big fan of Luffy’s transformations. Never really thought they looked all that cool, definitely Gear 4 when he got all fat.

Shit so wack.

But now with Gear 5, it seems as if people are either saying that it’s the best anime transformation of all time, or think that people are over hyping it. But hell, after watching 1000+ episodes to get to this moment, it better be the best transformation of all time.

People are also making fun of the Looney Tunes sound effects and animation that was added to this fight scene and transformation reveal.

This transformation even broke Crunchyroll with how many people were trying to watch the episode.

If I can put my two cents in. I don’t really see the hype around the transformation, but I’ve also never watched One Piece, so my viewpoint can be totally different from fans, which is understandable. But I didn’t watch Dragon Ball Super, and I still thought Ultra Instinct Goku was lit as fuck. So I don’t know. I’m happy for all the One Piece fans who thought this was peak content. At least the people who've been on this journey for years don’t seem disappointed.

What did you think of the Gear 5 transformation? Was Gear 5 hyped up too much? Have you watched or read all of One Piece? Tell us in the comments.

I don't like the One Piece art style, and this doesn't change my mind.

I really like the bouncy animation and how much of a love letter it is ti the old rubber hose cartoons back in the old days

After decades of "grr I'm angrier" transformations that primarily only focus on just strength, G5's focus on completely changing how Luffy is able to fight and has him laughing is refreshing. Besides I cannot think of another anime where the transformation held worldbuilding and plot relevance the way G5 does with its link to both Nika the Sun God and Joyboy the man who left behind One Piece.

Gear 5 redefines the new peak of all anime transformations ever, but I think it's a bit better in the manga. As hype as it is, parts of it feel a little "over-animated" in ways that are hard to follow. At the same time, there are cool little flourishes to it, and I do think it should use some cartoony sound effects. It's intentionally a cartoony power up. It's the ultimate freedom - it's fun.

This was exacerbated by that fool who said it was more iconic than Super Saiyan, wasn't it?

You said it right, "over hyping it", transformation so basic, manga was better, and the sound effects were to much, I understand putting a little but every single movement is kinda bad, didnt like and its waaay to far from being "peak transformation", even mob has a better transformation. "But even broke crunchy roll..." the fans trying to see, this overhyped transformation that broke the site.

Dark edgy anime transformations? Fuck you. We Looney Toons now. -Eiichiro Oda, apperently

I will admit, I like it a lot more than I did Gear 4, which felt... wrong, honestly. Like they were trying too hard to be serious about it. One Piece is a manga about a rubber pirate boy going on adventures and doing stupid shit, and going full Max Fleischer is the perfect antidote to the edge.

So Gear 5 is just Luffy becoming a living toon, which turns his hair white for some reason? And I do agree, the classic Looney Toons sound effects just do not fit there, and kind of ruin any sort of gravitas the transformation and fight scene might've had.

Just give it a try and you will understand it and that episode made me laugh so hard and so happy.
