Is The Future Of Smash Bros... Not About Smash?

I’m a bit late to this one, but as far as I can tell the really big news is still yet to come. Last week I saw that a leaker let somewhat credible information slip regarding a new Smash clone. No, not the Nickelodeon fighting game that somehow was greenlit and took the Internet by storm upon its recent release. I’m talking about another Smash style game in the works, this time being developed by Netherrealm Studios (Mortal Kombat) and utilizing the IPs owned by Warner Bros. While there’s been some debate as to whether NRS will actually be developers, it seems that multiple sources are confirming there’s some type of game in the oven and it is likely to be a Smash clone. And honestly if it was, that would make sense to me.

A few weeks ago on October 18, Sora was added as the final entry into the huge roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I can’t speak to the technical aspects of the game as I’m not personally into Smash and have only played it a couple of times, but from a roster size standpoint this truly is the “ultimate” version of the game. Not only did all the previous characters return, but then new ones were created on top of that. I mean, have you seen the picture with every character in the game? That shit is wild, not to mention hard to believe. With Sora’s arrival it was a bittersweet time for Smash fans. At this point they’ve achieved so much with this game, I have no idea when Nintendo will even consider making another title in the franchise. Sakurai, the lead, outdid himself alongside his coworkers in the amount of collaborations and content in the game. I have no clue if anyone will be able to recreate what he’s done down the line. As far as Smash is concerned, this may be the last big update for the game for years and years. Which means… the spot is open.

Holy SHIT that's a lot...and I'm not even sure if this is the most recent version of this picture.

The Nickelodeon game came out of fucking nowhere, but as far as the timing of its release, it was god damn perfect. Right when Smash fans are feeling sad that their game is nearing completion, BOOM bitch an entire new game and roster of characters from the universe of Nickelodeon to mess around with. You don’t even have time to feel sad baby, cheer up and play some Danny Phantom or Catdog. I think the game couldn’t have been released in a better time period. The market is open for Smash clones right now to fill in the gap while Ultimate finally calms down. Thus it makes perfect sense for Warner Bros. to want to get in on the action with some of their characters. According to the leaker, some characters have already been identified including Shaggy, Batman, Gandalf, Tom & Jerry, and more. The game is supposed to have some sort of tag mechanic but it’s currently dry on the details.

It's still hard to believe sometimes...

Take all this rumor bullshit with a grain of salt, but regardless of whether or not this specific game is coming out, I surmise it’s clear that the future of Smash won’t be shaped by the original Nintendo Smash series for a long time. It’s crazy, because Smash had a big tie into the NSFW community too. Everytime a new character was announced you could anticipate a huge rise of lewd images of said character circling the Internet for a while. I doubt any of these spin-off games will be able to recreate that magic. Still, it’s certainly looking like the end of an era in my opinion, unless Nintendo has some trick up their sleeve that I don’t know about. I’m sure the Smash Ultimate team deserves a break after all that, so personally I don’t mind seeing what these other companies can bring to the table IP wise, assuming they do. Ultimate’s legacy will remain. Are you excited for new Smash games seemingly being the new hotness? Would you be hype for a strictly anime Smash-clone crossover game? Will the leak hold true? Happy feet, wombo combo, THAT AIN’T FALCO!, OHHHHHHHHH OHHHHHH OHHHH leave a comment below!

I'm still disappointed that Solaire didn't get into Smash.

I saw footage of the Nick Smash clone, and it's pathetic. I'm pretty sure no new voice lines were recorded; they're all reused from the series and play the exact same line every single time for the same attack or move. No, there won't be any game that rivals Smash as a platform fighter ever, even with big names behind it. Just ask Playstation All-Stars how it did.

I feel like none of the copies are going to be good if they only copy the launch based combat. I am only going to be interested in one of these games if they also work on the party game element that made Smash the great series it is today.

...Okay, i now know it's a Nick game instead of something with Scooby Doo, but i still got to ask: Why do you have Shaggy as the opening image? It made me think Smash was adding him to the game.
