Geno Studio, Trigger, Production I.G and More Join Forces for Star Wars Anime Anthology
By Yung Namahage • 2 years ago

There aren't many franchises out there that have had the sheer global reach and cultural impact as Star Wars. Say what you will about the latest movies but things like The Mandalorian, Jedi: Fallen Order and The Clone Wars animated series prove that the galaxy far, far away still has the potential for engaging characters and interesting stories.

Disney's latest Star Wars efforts have been hit-and-miss, so now they're reaching out to veterans of the anime industry to put their own fresh spins on the universe George Lucas created in 1977. Lucas originally took inspiration from the samurai movies of Akira Kurosawa when writing the Jedi, and in turn Star Wars' influence can be seen in plenty of anime, namely GundamLegend of the Galactic Heroes and Gintama

Star Wars: Visions was described by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy as a "series of animated short films celebrating the Star Wars galaxy through the lens of the world's best anime creators. This anthology collection will bring ten [actually nine] fantastic visions from several of the leading Japanese anime studios, offering a fresh and diverse cultural perspective to Star Wars."

The studios involved in the anthology include Kamikaze Douga (the guys who do the CG in certain JoJo openings as well as a few scenes in Batman Ninja), Geno Studio (known for Golden Kamuy), Trigger (Little Witch Academia), Studio Colorido (Burn the Witch), Kinema Citrus (Rising of the Shield Hero), Science Saru (Japan Sinks) and Production I.G (Psycho-Pass seasons 1 & 3). Trigger and Science Saru have two epsiodes each while the others have one, counting up to nine episodes total.

The producers said the anthology won't be considered canon, but that shouldn't matter so long as they're able to stand up on their own merits. Judging by the trailer and the talent attached, it's safe to say Star Wars is currently in good hands. We've already got one new Star Wars waifu in the shape of a bunnygirl named Lop and we're sure to be seeing a lot more R34 soon.

Star Wars: Visions comes to Disney+ on September 22. Are you looking forward to it? Which studio are you most hyped to see taking on the Star Wars universe? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
