Are English Dubs Getting Too Current?
By ImJustThatKinky • 1 year ago

Dubs do have their charms, despite how much sub watchers will rag on them. I’m a sub watcher myself, but I’m not one of those sub watchers that just think English dubs of anime are just the worst thing ever. I just watch subs cause one, they’re usually released faster, and two, it just sounds better to hear the characters in their natural language. The same reason we watch cartoons in English and not in Japanese with English subtitles.

Now why am I bringing this up? Well, recently I spotted the clip of the GOATED sports anime Blue Lock and its English dub, and in the scene, they decided to go a line that had me laughing and also scratching my head.

I really like the, “GOTEEM!” line they added to the scene. It still pretty much portrays what the original scene was going for, while adding a western meme to it. It’s not like some dubs like Kobayashi Dragon Maid where they inserted some kind of women agenda that wasn’t a part of the original Japanese script.

So I was just wondering when is putting your own liberty in an English dub going too far? I feel like the “GOTEEM” is totally fine, but something like Dragon Maid is totally not called for. I would like to see more English dubs get a little goofy with their translation, I’m pretty sure Sk8te did that with their English dub. I feel like a little American influence here and there isn’t too bad. Now if they start getting to hentai English dubs level of just not giving a fuck, that’s where it might start becoming a problem.

Do you hate English dubs? Do you think Blue Lock's inclusion of “GOTEEM” was funny? Do you think it’s okay to add American slang in anime English dubs? Tell us in the comments.
