Trippy Site Generates Nonexistent Waifus
By Yung Namahage • 5 years ago

I know the headline is kind of redundant since, in a sense, no anime waifus actually exist (sad react), but bear with me here.

Surely one of the first things to do when finding an image of a cute anime girl is to wonder which anime, doujin, manga etc. she comes from, but what if she doesn't come from anywhere?

Similar to websites that fabricate images of people or AirBNBs that don't actually exist using a complex artifical neural network loaded with samples of real images, a researcher named Gwern Branwen created a website that does pretty much the same but with anime girls.

"This Waifu Does Not Exist" generates a new image of a freshly created anime girl every 15 seconds with an option to pause at the bottom of the screen, along with a randomly generated biography made with a slew of anime-related keywords that doesn't usually make sense, but that's not what we're here for. With plenty of different art styles, facial expressions and colors, you could fool just about anyone into thinking some of these girls were from a real series.

That being said, the generation network isn't perfect. Some "waifus" would look more at home in a Hieronymous Bosch painting than a magical girl anime.

Still, it's pretty fun to see these new, previously unforetold waifus spring out of nowhere. Who knows? You might even find your new best girl somewhere.
