Junji Ito's Tomie Returns to Live-Action
By Yung Namahage • 4 years ago

There are few artists, manga or otherwise, that can truly instill you with that eager sense of dread when you're about to turn the page, yet Junji Ito has mastered it. That unique quality is difficult to bring to a moving medium, which is why a lot of the anime or live action adaptations of his works tend to fall flat. Uzumaki cuts out a lot of the weirder moments from the souce material yet is somehow goofier, the Junji Ito Collection anime was plagued by iffy animation that ruined any tension and the Gyo animated movie is an affront to one of my favorite stories of his. But the Tomie series has experienced some success in the live-action world, spawning nine Japanese movies with various directors and leading ladies as well as a TV drama.

Now Alexandre Aja, director of films such as The Hills Have Eyes and Horns is stepping up to bring us his take on the character for the upcoming short-form streaming service Quibi. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2 3Aquaman) will take the reins as executive producer and scriptwriter, and Hiroki Shirota (The Outsider) will be co-producer.

Tomie is one of Ito's earliest, longest-running and most popular works, starring the eponymous beauty-marked demon girl who has a habit of seducing and manipulating men to the point of homicidal obsession. Whenever she gets murdered (which is a lot) she soon grows back and continues thotting about, cursing whoever killed her last. As a fan of the original works I'll try to remain optimistic about this, but it's not like Hollwood has a great track record of adapting J-Horror movies, let alone manga.

Quibi will be launching on April 6 next year, although it's not clear whether Aja's Tomie will be available at launch or after. Are you a fan of the series? Will you be looking forward to it? Do you think Aja will do a good job of adapting it? Let us know what you think as usual!
