An Interview with AnimeFlux
By Kasaix • 4 years ago

Kasaix: Hello Doujin Army! I’d like to introduce you all to another really talented artist: AnimeFlux. I’ve been following his work for quite some time, and I’m glad to be able to chat with him. A small quote from their site should tell you where their heart is when it comes to his work: “Artwork is both my passion and career”. Most certainly, that passion is really expressed in his work. Everything is sexy and imaginative. Pairing up the Lollipop Chainsaw and Onechanbara girls was a good move.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Thanks for taking the time to hang out. How’s it going, AnimeFlux?

AnimeFlux: Hey there, thanks very much for having me!

Kasaix: It's my pleasure. Let’s start at the top, could you tell me how you first got into art?

AnimeFlux: I think I've had a pencil (or crayon, as it were) in my hand since I was little, maybe like 5 or 6? Early NES games really opened my eyes to art, more specifically the game manuals they used to come with. I have memories of sitting on the floor staring at the manual for Legend of Zelda and marveling at the cool monster designs. I think that kind of planted the seed.

I didn't get into art as an actual career path until much later, late high school I think.

Kasaix: A lot of really talented artists first found their love for art from a young age, and I just love that. Having something you like doing since early childhood and taking it with you as you grow up is great. Did you go to an art school, or are you all self taught?

AnimeFlux: Technically I went to an art school, but I didn't really learn anything there that applies to what I do now. I already knew my way around digital art programs before starting college, and while they did teach a bit of discipline, I'd say all the "technique" I've learned over the years was self-taught.

Kasaix: Nice. I admire people who have the patience and willingness to take their lessons into their own hands.

What are your favorite characters and themes to draw?

AnimeFlux: I've come to love the Persona series, so really anything from that is always pretty refreshing. As for themes, I'm a sucker for the ol' cute-and-sexy combo. If I can take a character, even one who might be inherently harsh, and bring out her cute side, I'm happy.

Kasaix: I absolutely love that. Cute and sexy, and turning a harsh girl cute is great.

I've noticed a character frequently appearing in your works, and she's your profile picture. A girl with green skin and purple hair. Is she your mascot?

AnimeFlux: Hahaha, yeah pretty much. That's my dragongirl Nalica. She was sort of an accident that somehow became my mascot after she debuted a few years ago.

Kasaix: Nice. I like that name too. Do you have a backstory, or a character outline for her?

AnimeFlux: I do, though it's admittedly a bit convoluted and somewhat secret (I have a script I'm writing to create a visual novel at some point). I can say she's naiive and not well-versed in the ways of the modern world, so when she makes her appearance, she relies heavily on her human "master" to help her out. If you're familiar with the Chobits series, I can definitely say it was an inspiration for Nalica's story.

Kasaix: That sounds interesting. I hope to be able to check this visual novel out at some point.

How long does it typically take you to finish a project?

AnimeFlux: Hmm... it depends a lot on the scope of the project. If we're talking individual art pieces, probably anywhere from 6-12 hours on average. If the background is complex, or there are several characters interacting, then add on a few hours to that.

Kasaix: Nice. What do you feel is your best picture yet, and why?

AnimeFlux: Oof... okay, this is a really tough one. I guess I'd say the one I did of my character Bramble as a shopkeep. She's on a ladder in the back of the store, and a customer has decided he likes the view and is taking advantage of the situation. Looking back on it, there are several technical flaws with the piece that I'd correct if I had to do it over, but I really love how the composition turned out, as well as the color contrasts... Also the scene itself is honestly kinda hot XD

Kasaix: I like that angle. The manga Oversized Sextet is nothing but that. A normal guy with a bunch of giant girls.

Besides your planned visual novel, is there a project you'd really like to work on in the future?

AnimeFlux: Well I'm currently an artist on a separate game dev project. Assuming it goes well, I might like to delve more into that. Otherwise, it might be fun to be involved in one of those compilation books, where several artists showcase their work and do art jams together. I've always thought those were really cool.

Kasaix: That does sound cool. I'd love to see something like that.

What setup do you use to draw?

AnimeFlux: I use a Wacom Intuos Pro tablet and Photoshop, primarily.

Kasaix: Oh, cool setup.

Where does your username come from?

AnimeFlux: Ugh, I wish it was something cool, but realistically I've had this username for like 20 years. As a teenager I was just getting into anime (it was pretty new to the US back then), and at the time my art style was always changing, hence "flux". I wish I could change it, but that ship has sailed and this is what I'm known by now.

Kasaix: I know that feeling. My username is from an old Kingdom Hearts RP forum. It's stuck ever since.

Let's wrap this up for now. Do you have any final words to all your fans?

AnimeFlux: Thank you everyone who's watched and supported me over the years, I literally could not do any of this without you. Special shout-out to my site subscribers and Twitter folks, they've helped me through some tough art slumps and helped me to become a better artist. I'll work hard to get even better and do more stuff that people have been asking to see <3

P.S. Interview

Kasaix: Okay, so what's the story behind the coffee shop girl giving the waiter a good tip? I see Nalica in the background, which is a good detail

AnimeFlux: The coffee shop (and actually a lot of the locales in my Monster Hunnies series) exist in a fictional city called Porte Avant. It's a completely sex-open society, where public displays of sexuality are accepted and commonplace. So the coffee shop episode features a place where patrons can order "specialty services" in addition to the normal stuff (coffee, tea, etc).
